Just a bad hair day.

Shantae and the Pirate's Curse, the cheeky platformer/metroidvania where the purple-haired genie gets rubbed the wrong way, is available now for Windows, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 50% launch discount.

Shantae is not having the best of days. She has lost her genie powers and her blissful bubble bath just got rudely interrupted. Oh and it seems like she'll also have to join forces with her arch-nemesis, the feisty pirate mistress Risky Boots, in order to save the land from an evil curse. Great, just great. At least she still has her audacious belly-dancing moves and her lethally fabulous coif to help her get through the day. And eliminate the man-eating beasties.

But being a pirate turns out to also have some cool advantages, as Shantae can now use more than her hair-whips to dispose of enemies and traverse the treacherous levels. All these new weapons and moves will soon come in handy, because the place is teeming with monsters, traps, and bosses who didn't get the memo about the overconsumption of carbs. There is also a diverse cast of colourful characters to interact with, and among the frenetic platforming and the relentless fighting, Shantae is determined to have a good time, while saving the land and getting back her mojo. Even if that requires an uneasy alliance with, like, the most untrustworthy pirate ever.

Wipe out pesky monsters and scary bosses with your hair-whips, and rebottle your missing magic powers in Shantae and the Pirate's Curse, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 50% discount will last until March 4, 10:59 AM GMT.
Heck yeah, instabought.
Instabought. Thank you for bringing it here!
I just finished streaming this game on the GOGcom Twitch channel. So much fun! Even better than its predecessor, tight platforming controls, fan service (if you're into that sort of thing), bouncy music, it's got everything a lover of platform games could want!

Needless to say, I highly recommend it, especially at 50% off!
Man, I'm really happy this is here now. I feel like people's expectations for what a 2D actioner can be have been lowered with all the me-too indie games that plague the market now. This game is the real deal. It's up there with classics like Mega Man X. Fantastic level design, perfect music, and charm... it's really something special.

If you're on the fence, I think you should give it a shot.

IronArcturus: Interesting! Do you know if SatPC works with an Xbox 360 controller?
I completed the Steam version with a 360 controller, so unless they've wrecked the GOG version that should be possible.

gibbeynator: You know the original game is a Gameboy game, right? It'll never come here, Nintendo would never allow it.
You know Shantae: Risky's Revenge (DSi) and Shantae And The Pirate's Curse (3DS & Wii U) were originally Nintendo games, right? If WayForward wanted to remake it, port it or even bring it to us via emulation (there's no proprietary kickstart ROM needed to do so), why would Nintendo have a say? That it hasn't happened yet probably has more to do with Capcom being the publisher on the original.

Vote for the rest of the Shantae series:

Shantae
Shantae: Half-Genie Hero

While you're at it, vote for other WayForward games:

Adventure Time: Explore The Dungeon Because I DON’T KNOW!
Adventure Time: The Secret Of The Nameless Kingdom
Double Dragon: Neon
DuckTales: Remastered
Goosebumps: The Game
Mighty Switch Force! Hyper Drive Edition
Mighty Switch Force! 2
Mighty Switch Force! Academy
Mighty Switch Force! Hose It Down!

We're not missing much if the Game Boy Color game doesn't come to PC at some point. It was kinda cool, but not a particularly outstanding game. Risky's Revenge is when they kicked the series into high gear.

Anyway, hope all this stuff does well for WayForward. Would be great if they followed up with the similarly excellent Mighty Switch Force HD.

Edit: It's nice to have something to be really enthusiastic about on GOG. It's been close to 3 months since a game on here has really gotten me excited.

Nope, Capcom was only the distributor. WayForward self-published the original game on the Nintendo 3DS e-shop, so there is nothing that could legally stop them from porting the original on the PC. I guess, though, that they aren't particularly interested in bringing it here in its original 8-bit glory and would rather rerelease it in a more modern form, perhaps after they are done with the Half-Genie Hero.

So is SatPC more of a Metroidvania than S:RR?

I wouldn't really call it a Metroidvania game. At least, not in the normal sense. The game is split up into 5 levels, all of which are quite large. You'll gradually explore more and more of those levels as you gain new power-ups, but it's not a huge, interconnected world like a normal Metroidvania. It's most similar to something like Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, if you're familiar with that game. I'd say it's closer to Mega Man X than Metroid.

I was going off of Wikipedia, which lists Capcom as publisher, at least for Shantae's original 2002 release on the Gameboy Color.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shantae

But that's good news that they retained the full rights. Bring on the port or remake!

NuffCatnip: Oh, I forgot, how do I change the language ?
I´d like to play it in english, but a coule parts are in german.
I'd like to know this as well. It's always annoying when games don't give you the option to change languages in the menu.
Bought it. Risky's Revenge was pretty good.
Argh! I want this game before the sale is over! I hate being broke!
