richlind33: Where did I say that they're more addictive than other game mechanisms?
Hint: I didn't, I stated that achievements are lure modules, and that lure modules impact brain chemistry, which is true, though it probably depends on whether or not you're a completionist, which is the target demographic. If you're not a completionist, you probably don't have to worry about achievement addiction -- which is good because there are plenty of other things to worry about. lol

MarkoH01: I would not worry any more about achievements than I would worry about me being a collector. There's not much I can do against it since it also is a sort of "addiction" - however it is completely harmless and nothing that makes me or my life more miserable ... the opposite is the fact. So yes, I don't see any problem at all.
Addiction is when you lose control and your life becomes chaotic and unmanageable, and the denial mechanism makes it difficult to see the warning signs before it's too late.

richlind33: How is there informed consent when people are mostly or completely unaware of what is being taken from them?
avatar
MarkoH01: Well, it should be clear to most people that today everything possible will be tracked or followed up for marketing reasons ... is there anybody who is thinking that the internet is a safe place to be?
Most people think anti-virus progs provide security, which is nonsense, so yeah, I think most people think the internet is safe.

Not true. With this definition not a single smoker would be addicted.

Mobeeuz: That glass house you look down on others from is chocked full of that very same 'lure module' you speak of...

richlind33: Are achievements part of game development, or marketing?
Both.

And I bet in development, especially for big games and all, they put obvious stuff in there...for their own game-research and reasons (for how to improve or gear their next games/iterations).

Not sure how GOG does it, but on Steam - you can see the percentage of players that often did X quests, took whatever paths, got whatever ending, beat it on certain difficulties, beat it on certain modes, etc etc....as long as dev's made those as Achievements.

I'm sure this also lets the dev's know what to cut, do more of, or whatever -
"Hey, barely anyone did the side-quests....why are we putting these in?"
"Hey, nobody finished the main story - we need for the next game for that to be better."
"Hey, is the main story too long? A lot of people did all or a lot of the side stuff; maybe we should do more side quests and shorter the main story."
"Why are we doing harder difficulty modes, if nobody's finished it on this mode?"
"Barely anyone played evil - why put evil paths in? Let's just do different variations of good."
"Hey, a lot of players only did around 10 hours, yet we put 60 hours or content in there. What is not hooking them? Is the game too repetitive?"
Etc etc.

You don't think pissing your health away with cancer sticks is destructive, chaotic behavior?

I guess bad health is so hypernormalized that we tend not to recognize it as a variable that relates to life choices and carcinogens in our food, water and air, etc.

Like compulsively replying to forum posts in order to maintain one's imagined sense of superiority and self-worth to the point that context no longer matters perhaps?
