Sea Dogs: Caribbean Tales, an action/adventure/RPG hybrid that lets you explore all aspects of a corsair's thrilling life, is now available DRM-free on GOG.com.

Dogs are famously friendly, loyal, and perhaps a little bit gullible creatures. Sea Dogs, however, are nothing of the sort. They lead lives full of fighting, murder, plunder, and uneasy camaraderie, usually feverish with a self-destructive gold rush. Blaze and Beatrice Sharp are born into this life, having inherited their father's swashbuckling legacy. Time to see how they measure up.

Now that they've both come of age, it's time to make their own name, carve their own path through this open-world of exciting yet dangerous opportunities. There are 16 ships to choose from, different crew members to hire, weapons to equip on your ship or take along in your land adventures, skills to pick, quests to undertake, treasures to unearth. Feel free to seek your fortune and explore the secrets of the Caribbean islands, but never let your guard down. After all, how you handle yourself during the intense naval battles and your continuous struggles with the capricious sea weather will determine whether you name will become synonymous with glorious piracy or a brief footnote in the chronicles of this brutal age of buccaneers.

Dip you cutlass into a sea of perils, treasures, and the blood of your enemies as you live your own Sea Dogs: Caribbean Tales, DRM-free on GOG.com.

wolfsrain: Vanilla Oblivion.

anothername: Thx. Ouch. Worst kind of scaling. :/

... but it looks nice. And maybe it has the right mods to fix that. I'll give it a try.
From my point of view: Sea Dogs, Pirates of the Caribbean and Age of Pirates: Caribbean Tales (as the original title was initially for this release) are the best releases. Age of Pirates: City of Abandoned Ships was something that i kind of disliked because of the level-scaling. Don't know how For Each His Own is as a game, as it was just released on the western market this year.

musteriuz: I still can't get the first Sea Dogs I bought from gog to run on my Vista machine. I have the 2.0.0.3 installer downloaded and installed.

omega64: Contact support.
He, he, I thought someone might say that. My last contact with support resulted in a very underwhelming, well - totally useless if I'm honest, response, so I am in no hurry to contact them again. Maybe one day when my backlog has dropped waaaay under its current tally of 1220+ games, I will feel the need to get it and 2 or 3 others sorted.

Oh, my bad. Assumed this one here (Tales) was the one with the sucky level scaling. All the better its not :)
This release is the one to get. And a female character as a choice, always a plus:)
From the reviews maybe I should avoid this one.
Are there any mods to improve it?
I really like the idea of an open world pirate game. Elite on the open seas :-)

Better get Sid Meiers Pirates!
So which is the best game of the series?

Niggles: So which is the best game of the series?
My personal order:

1. Pirates of the Caribbean (named Sea Dogs 2 in some parts of Eastern Europe, Poland i think mainly and Corsairs 2 in The Russian Federation and the former soviet republics)
2. Age of Pirates: Caribbean Tales (even better with the historical immersion mod of the Supermod)
3. Sea Dogs
4. City of Abandoned Ships

Can't tell about For Each His Own, as i do not have that game, so i did not play it.

The general consensus is that PotC is the best game in the series by a longshot. It's also the one that still has updated mods (i am talking about the english modding community, the russian modding community has quite a few mods for all the games, but those are not translated in english).
I prefer Age of Pirates (Sea Dogs: Caribbean Tales) over Pirates of the Caribbean, because of:

-town management system (once you conquer one for yourself)
-dynamic political situation on the Caribbean (empires can conquer each other's colonies)
-deeper combat mechanics (in PoTC it's based on attack and block, in AoP there are different attacks and a flint)
-the possibility to work for any nation, not just the English

On the other hand, PoTC has the following advantages:
-an actual storyline
-jungles (you can't go outside towns in AoP)
-more interesting trade (contraband is not global, each island has different contraband, so you can actually buy it on one island and sell on another - in AoP contraband is global, you can't buy it anywhere and you need to loot a ship which has it in its cargo to lay hands on it - which raises the question of how did these ships get contraband in the first place)

There were two smuggler islands in Caribbean Tales if i remember correctly. So you could get contraband from one of them and unload it on certain islands that would accept it.

These smuggler islands were for selling contraband. If there was a possibility to buy it there, too, it was pointless, because it would cost more than you could sell it for.
But now that I think of it, I think contraband was dynamic (as were exported and imported goods for each island), so you could buy something cheap on a regular island and then find out it's become contraband.

Not having that choice is a serious knock out criteria :)

But AoP2 does have female chars too, does it not? According to the wiki at least: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_Pirates_2:_City_of_Abandoned_Ships

So far its really cool. After some noob errors (not getting that F2 opens the character screen; Ctrl to pan the cam) its fun.

The Pirates that want to blackmail you are annoying. One popped his "Give X Gold and I let you go" every five seconds. Double annoying because fire all cannons & the default "Yes, I give up take all my gold" are both on space bar.

Thankfully that was only once & finally gutting that prick in his cabin was really liberating :D

Interesting. Does the first Sea Dogs have town management as well? This may be the series I'm looking for.

The choice in CoAS is only for the freeplay. The campaign is strictly a male affair, as the story is based on a book by Rafael Sabatini.

I'm pretty sure the original Sea Dogs (NOT Caribbean Tales) doesn't have town management, but I haven't played it. Caribbean Tales does, but has its problems, too - little to no storyline is probably what grinds most players' gears.
