Action, exploration, discovery, trade, diplomacy. Can you ask for more in a title about the fantasy of space?
How about power? You're in command of a hulking, terrifying star destroyer. You will traverse the outer reaches of space doing what you can to get by - whether it's fending off or hunting pirates, exploring the unknown, mining, or scavenging - all the paths and choices are yours. Your riches can be wisely invested, or spent on a few more guns and a bigger chassis. But the huge universe open before you may just be more than you've bargained for. Just... Try to survive without blowing up everything.

Well, maybe you could also ask for a killer soundtrack. Done.

Six of the TechRaptor staff died fighting for the review code. Worth it.
I've pre-wishlisted this one. Lots of mentions of Freelancer in this thread. Do any of you guys have a "complete" version of that game? In the version I have I can't trade with the planets populated by apes or androids, *sigh*.

I don't know why, but this has to be one of the most funny statements I've ever seen.

What? I have played Freelancer back in the day to completion and I never saw planets populated by apes or androids. Did you mod your version or am I missing something here.
EDIT: The GalaxyPeer.dll file in the game directory is causing it to crash, deleting it let the game launch.

This game doesn't run at all for me, immediately crashes. Windows 7 64-bit, i7, GTX 980, 16 GB RAM.

I see two others are experiencing the same issue in the forums. Will wait a few hours then request a refund if it can't be solved. Very disappointed, it looked awesome.

I've never played the game myself, but it looks like this is a secret: http://www.ign.com/faqs/2006/freelancer-139516-planet-of-the-apes-easter-eggfaq-726049

Wow, I used to play Freelancer for hours and I've never heard of this easter egg before! GOG, you gotta get a deal with Microsoft to get Freelancer! :)

Valer1us: This guy in the promo screenshots though...

LOL! I noticed that too. :)

Is it really a trap, though? Or is the game as cool as it looks?

Looks like somebody did not explore the entirety of the Omicron systems. ;) Fun game back then, especially in multiplayer and I wish it was here.
GOG Desperately needs Freelancer in its Roster :)

that was such an awesome game :)
Do they plan a Linux release? The game looks interesting, but without the Linux version I'm not going to buy it.

JudasIscariot: Well, I am taking a build home with me to see if it runs on WINE so I'll see for myself :D
Please let us know how it went :)

On June 10th, one of the developers said this:

"Now that real SteamOS boxes are pre-orderable there's a much better chance of this - although it still won't be at launch. However, since we have a functional Mac build we're just a hop-skip-and-jump from Linux. At present I just don't have time to set up a box, figure out the dev environment, or devote any hours to it at all. I'd certainly enlist help to get it done, but I'd still have to have a dev environment working and enough comfort with it that I could generate and deploy builds to keep it at parity with all the other builds, and so it'll have to wait for a little later if it is indeed going to happen."

It's a hidden planet (kind of a in-game joke). It's there in the stock game :)

Interesting, but it sounds like developer isn't familiar with Linux, which isn't too promising.

How can you explore without being pressured by main missions? I thought you can't ignore them (and they tend to be popping up as soon as you make some income in the game), which kind of always annoyed me.

You only progress the story when you A) meet the next monetary level, and B) trigger it by flying to a certain place to meet with Juni or someone else. So long as you don't go to that place, you can do just about anything you want (assuming you've unlocked access to the system you want to explore). You'll get nagged about going to the meet-up but you don't get forced to go to his or her location.

So even if you reach that monetary level, you can still continue exploring? That's good to know.
