Somewhere, over the railroad.

Railroad Tycoon Bundle, which contains the three games that put this sub-genre on track, is now available DRM-free on GOG.com with a 66% launch discount. Buying each game individually grants you a 50% discount, instead.

There is something strangely exhilarating, wondrous, and just downright fun to playing with trains. Could be the fact that trains give the impression of moving on their own, almost like a living organism. Could also be about the unmistakably retro feel of the locomotive, which makes it seem like a relic of a bygone era that is still somehow relevant. Mostly, though, trains are cool because the views associated with riding them are consistently breathtaking.

To capture the magic of what the railroad meant for human transportation, one must go back to 1804, then slowly work their way closer and closer to modern times. Railroad 2: Platinum and Railroad Tycoon 3 are the best express tickets for such a journey, letting you build whole networks of railroad tracks, closely inspect the different types of available train engines, and take in the awesome landscapes. Once you have absorbed and mastered the craft of railroad management, ask the conductor to set course for Sid Meier's Railroads!. It is here that you will put those strategy/simulation skills to the test and try to build the grandest rail empire in the nation, despite your opponents' shrewd efforts to derail you.

Catch a ride to the history and challenges of the locomotive in the Railroad Tycoon Bundle, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 66% bundle discount and the 50% individual discounts will last until April 5, 13:59 BST / 5:59 AM PDT / 8:59 AM EDT.
Was waiting for digital release of RT2 since many years.
GOG, you made me happy.
Take my money.
GOG, you did great getting these classics, but you should release the first one, even though it's free, for collection's purposes.

I really don't like to have a 2 without the 1 in my library.

HunchBluntley: Actually, the only place it mentions the Platinum edition is in the bonuses section, for the manual. It's possible that that was the only version of the RrT2 manual they were able to find a copy of. I guess one of the blues (or someone already familiar with the game who has purchased and tried this version) will have to clarify.

wongheiming: animalmother2105, "Second century" is included.
As a proof of purchased and installed.
Thanks guys.

EDIT: Also, how do the other games compare to RT2?

tinyE: I'm a railroad freak having grown up next door to a small town station, but Sid's games can be so damn intimidating.

Any comments of the learning curve of these?
I say you should wait for the release of Railroad Tycoon Deluxe. Not only is it the best in the series, the 4(?) difficulty levels introduce more complicated aspects of running a railroad at every step. When it's easy, you don't have to worry about stock prices, hostile takeovers, trains crashing, supply and demand of different types of cities, pushing other companies out of town, etc. This is the way difficulty should be scaled. Mechanics are actually removed from the game until you are ready to learn them; rather than just giving other railroads more hitpoints ;)
I actually have a CD copy of Sid Meier's Railroads lying around. Maybe I should get install it sometime.
Does anyone know how to reverse the trains in Sid Meier's Railroads? I'm in the tutorial trying to create double tracks, but neither trains are moving since they're still stuck on the same line for some reason.
Oh, RT2, how I hate thee. My last experience with it, was planning how to spawn my railroads for ~4 hours (and doing nothing else!). Then, when I was about to start building I noticed I missed one resource and my whole plan went dead. I uninstalled the game and never looked back... Instabought! :D

Matruchus: Oh, yeah. I have that one but couldn't get into it too much since its just a re branded Rollercoaster Tycoon game. It just didn't work right for me but that's personal taste. Railroad Tycoon 2+3 though are the real deal. Railroads though is just meh but that's my personal opinion on it.
No problem, I totally understand that you can not love it ;) In fact, for me it's a "love or hate" game. I'm in the love side, especially because it reminds me a lot of things I love in RCT1, but with trains (to simplify my thoughts). But there are so big flaws... No automatic train replacement for example. Only this is such a huge flaw.
Interesting :) May I ask why you don't like Railroads ?
So is there a manner in which to finagle RailRoad Tycoon II to run in a Window?
Except still no original Railroad Tycoon, the best of the bunch and the only one I'm really interested in!

Rail Road Tycoon was such a fun game. I found one of the laminated flow charts from the game a few months ago. Brought back memories. I can't remember if I had it for the Atari ST or only for the 486 I had. I think it would be easier getting back into the ST as opposed to MS DOS. Would be much easier if they came to GOG. Is there a problem with the old MicroProse games coming to GOG?

As others have previously mentioned RT Deluxe is available for free directly from 2K or other select sources.

I may have loved the game back in the day, but not so long ago I've tried playing it again and that UI is just beyond dated and clunky. Would I mind having it on my GOG account? Not at all. Would I actually play it? Not likely. Call me indifferent about the subject matter. *shrug*
Somebody give this man a cigar! +1
I've always LOVED Sid Meier's Railroads! I still have the original retail CD version. Unfortunately, even with all the patches and tricks I've read about online it's still an immensely buggy game. I'd be curious to know if anything was done to the GOG version to enhance stability? I love playing it but hate the constant crashes. If this version is as unstable as the ones I've played I highly recommend setting the game to auto save as frequently as possible (like every minute).

I see mixed opinions about this one... What makes you love it ?
