OVERpowered, OVERswarmed, OVERthrilled.

Raiden IV: Overkill, a frenetic vertical scrolling shooter, is available now DRM-free on GOG.com with a 30% launch discount.

In the days of yore when coin-ops ruled the Earth, top-down shoot-'em-ups were the best method of making humans deposit their hard-earned cash into the bellies of our rattling mechanical overlords. Coinops are nearly extinct now, but vertical scrolling shooters are here to stay, and Raiden IV: Overkill is the living, breathing, over-addictive proof! Clear screen after screen of swarming enemies with your formidably overpowered weaponry - leaving heaps of floating space debris in your wake. And be sure to gear up for the epic boss fights, because these oversized devils are going to take all the firepower and skill you can muster.

Collect weapons and power-ups, pump up your ship and try the all-new Overkill game mode, in which you'll earn points for eliminating enemies the moment they appear on screen. And all that with an impressive 3D coating that makes every bit of Raiden IV: Overkill look spiffier than ever.

Blow up scores of space-hoodlums and look cool doing it in Raiden IV: Overkill, now DRM-free on GOG.com. The launch discount will last until February 17, 1:59 PM GMT.

Note: Raiden IV: Overkill does not currently include Global Leaderboards and Replays, so the base price has been lowered to reflect this. The game's price will return to normal once these features are added. Owners of the game will not have to pay extra.
Awesome release, I love "shmups".

Something is bothering me though:

Why are the "Games In Development" overshadowing these actual releases?

When I click on GOG, I normally look at the first large image displayed to know if a new game is released or not. Currently it's still showing yesterday's release Kona: Day One as the first item, and Raiden IV as the second slide image. I wouldn't have known Raiden IV was even released if I didn't decide to scroll down and read the headlines.

GOG should make a specific front page side section for the "In Development" games rather than having them front and center. Let the actual new releases have that large image in the center, putting the "In Development" games there is confusing, annoying, and ultimately makes GOG look very desperate.

Agreed.

That bothered me too. I don't mind the GID titles being in the big slideshow, I just think the newest announcement should always be first in the carousel. I usually hit the front page and see if there is a new slide up, and if not often assume there is no new release. It's disorienting when there is one but it's buried behind older news images.

Exactly, I'm not sure if it was by mistake, but the latest news should always be on top.
I come to the shmup release threads for the bitching about the lack of shmups. Love you guys. :)

Even with this release, the GOG shooter landscape is undeniably bereft of choice.

I'll stop complainin' when GOG stops rejectin' :p
Good. This is a step in the right direction! I'm hoping that this is a sign of things to come rather than a one-off of sorts.

In any case, I'm obviously buying it. It's been two months since I've actually bought a game on GOG, so it feels kinda nice.

For those unfamiliar with Raiden IV, it's a substantially better game than Raiden III. It doesn't go full bullet hell, but it gets pretty nuts at times. Overkill is a tweaked version of the original, and the PC version is a good port -- the definitive release of the game. I would not base my expectations on Raiden III, and definitely not on DotEmu's awful Raiden Legacy ports.

Raiden IV looks nice, and I'll definitely consider purchasing it once there's more news on the quality of its port.

That being said, I'd buy Cave's shmups on day 1 if they were released on GOG. Just sayin', that's all...

DotEmu's Legacy release is shameful, but then again pretty much everything they put out is half-arsed.

Classic Raiden and Raiden Fighters deserved better treatment.
Don't forget this game from the same publisher:

Funny thing is that you look at Raiden Fighters Aces on the 360, and it's an absolutely sublime port. Kinda the gold standard. You can even run the games at their native 57fps frame rate (or whatever it was.) Having an option like that, and hooking it up to a G-Sync monitor so that it completely replicates the arcade originals would be awesome.

But, no such luck. Not yet, anyway. Maybe Degica will swoop in and save the day there, too.

Yeah that was a great port.

It's unlikely to see a resurrection by Degica, licensing for one but I can't imagine anyone involved seeing a new release of these as a profitable venture. :/

DotEmu releases are incredibly horrible. Nothing like piss poor emulations. Doesn't help that they are cell phone ports to begin with.

I didn't know that they had a pc port of Darius Burst. I would be up for that. I'm still hoping the full Cave catalog gets pc ports here.

I'm not a big fan of the genre, but I bought it as a vote for shmups for all the sad people. :)

So are most shooter enthusiasts (and so should anyone with any interest in the genre), but it all comes down to if GOG actually gives a crap about us, we all know the publisher has been trying to get them here.

Dariusburst's PC port is really good too btw.
