JudasIscariot: I just finished a quick test on the game in Wine Staging 2.0-rc2:

The game works quite well although the interface may take time getting used to as you change your orientation by moving the mouse around and it can move somewhat quickly. Still, everything seems to work so far, including saving the game.
Thanks! It looks like the kind of a game that I like, so maybe I should try it.

Yeah, I was expecting something related to DirectX to rear its ugly head but I played the game and everything appears to work :)

Shadowcat: Funny, I was looking at this the other day for the first time in years, and now it pops up here.
...and NOW, while cleaning out cruft in the house, I found myself leafing through an old PC gaming magazine, and there was a review of this game!

(CGW June 1998, for those wondering -- and if you have any vintage game mags around, I highly recommend leafing through them. There's GOG fodder on every other page, and it really is quite the nostalgia trip.)

I'm not going to type the whole two-page review, but reviewer Johnny L. Wilson opens with:

Of Light & Darkness is en eclectic cornucopia of myth, rumour, history, travesty, and theology. Its plot is a rich tapestry in which the seductive power of Evil is rendered with a capital "E" and incredibly sophisticated art and acting are used to pull gamers into the unsettling morass of the story. And this story is an incredibly vivid and disturbing tale set against the backdrop of global catastrophe. It is an adventure game in the finest tradition, but it offers a race against the clock to add adrenaline to the familiar mix, an eschatological marathon, if you will, where humanity's destiny is the ultimate prize.
and concludes:

Of Light & Darkness is a fresh, fascinating, rich, mesmerizing experience. It requires patience, diligence, and frequent restarts to win. It requires forgiveness with regard to its interface. Still, upon completion, the Chosen One looked on all that he had won. And lo, it was very good -- but not quite worthy of a CG Choice [Award].

* Appeal: Fans of puzzle-driven games who don't mind tracking and backtracking; those who crave atmosphere and story in their adventures.

* Pros: Magnificent graphics; sterling acting performances; rich, bizarre plot elements.

* Cons: Infuriating interface and too many Fed-Ex-type excursions reduce the enjoyment factor.

* CG Rated: 4/5

this looks very interesting I am interested to hear more about it from markH0 or anyone else who can give more of a sense of it (I'm not seeing it be like myst at all)

logical-application puzzles or brain-puzzles? many timed events?
