Mark of the Deep is an epic pirate-themed adventure with a strong narrative and a thrilling mix of Metroidvania and Souls-Like elements – and it’s now out on GOG with a -15% launch discount until February 3rd, 5PM UTC!

A pirate ship wrecked on a mystic island, till then known only by myths n’ tales. Play as Marcus “Rookie” Ramsey and explore the eerie areas of this island surrounded by a mysterious curse in search of your missing crew: the Angry Mermaids!

Now on GOG!
This release seems to check every word of the buzzword bingo card. But what's it really like?

✔Metroidvania
✔Souls-Like
✔Roguelike

I guess this one isn't a solo bingo winner since it's not pixel art. I'm not saying this makes the game bad -- Rogue Waters is actually a pretty great game recently with some of these, and Dead Cells hits them all and is awesome. Just that catering to the buzzwords definitely makes a lot of people question it.

Indeed. So far, at least one person have questioned it. Reminds me about the old joke about counting that had the the punchline going - "One, two, three, many"

The devs mentioned the game not being a roguelike, apparently the tag got added by the (Steam) community.
I think I remember a gog employee saying they don't pull their tags from the other store, but I wouldn't know where else they get them from if not Steam...not the devs it looks like.

Question from a user:

Hi,

Is this a roguelike game where you start over if you die on a run like Hades?
Or does the game have a main campaign with a narrative and quests?

Answer from a dev:

Hello!

Mark of the Deep is NOT a roguelike, it follows a "campaign".

That being said, it's worth mentioning that the game is not completely linear, and that there are many secondary quests and objectives!

I don't think the devs of Death's Door will like this... Even the UI looks very similar!

Thanks for that. If you have a link to that source, send it over to a GOG blue so they can correct the card? Tags should be accurate (and roguelike turns off a lot of people!)

There are many procedurally/randomly generated/roguelike games that follow a campaign. FTL, Nethack, Tales of Maj'eyal. That's a complete non answer.

It doesn't have to be a non-answer. Looks like the dev is potentially answering multiple questions with that sentence, not necessarily intending to state the second part as reasons why it's not a Roguelike. But I can see why you might think so, given the way it's formatted.

Not sure how FTL fits in as a campaign game. It's Roguelike through and through (and, IMO, the best of any I've played). You do a run and done. With some meta-progress of things unlocking.

The goal and ultimatum is the same per game, only the minutia changes: Defeat the flagship or die trying.
More like Diablo meets Arc the Lad.....
Now if the supporter pack could be made available for purchase on here too - that'd be great.

Hopefully they bring the supporter pack here as well.
A game studio from Brazil - interesting!

Their website appears to be dead. You charge 25 USD for a game and you can't renew your hosting?

Still does not compute. FTL is a prototypical Roguelike game. Win or lose, reset and start again. It's not a traditional 'same every time' game at all.
