Kingdom: New Lands builds upon the gorgeous art and unassuming charm of the original with new set pieces, new characters, and additional travelling companions, while keeping the innovative gameplay elements that made it shine. Expanding on the surprisingly effective mix of 2D sidescrolling with resource management and strategy, Kingdom: New Lands again gives you the reigns of your procedurally-generated domain. You're in charge of the well-being, prosperity, and unity of your people, and when the darkness comes at night to take everything you have, you'll stand by your men until the very end.

Drive your Kingdom: New Lands into a new age of prosperity, DRM-free on GOG.com.
If you like how the game sounds, hop onto the enriched Kingdom Soundtrack and ride into the sunset.

Funny how the riders are holding torches in front of them while riding through the night. Try that and see how much you will see of your surroundings. :-D

A common mistake in movies and games, it's partly so that the audience can see the character's face, but it's still the least useful way to use a 360° light source. From the moment you realise that, you will notice it often. So, sorry for this. :-)

For more in-depth rants about torches and fire in movies watch Lindybeige's videos on YouTube. (I don't know if it's allowed to link to YT here, so I didn't. Just search for "Lindybeige torches".)

Zoidberg: So just new content, no gameplay fixes. Tried the original once, it's OK but got boring relatively quickly. And this one is still RP and isn't it more expensive too? By 50%... Tell me if I'm wrong.

Onox: It seems that the original was $9.99, so yes, 50 % more expensive, or maybe even worse with the new regional pricing =/
I'm definitely not getting it anytime soon.
It looks like an interesting game. It's a shame I missed it until it jumped in price. I'll wishlist it for now.
I owned the original but hadn't gotten around to playing it yet.

Does anyone know if I should play this version or "classic" for a first playthrough? Do they essentially start the same way or are they totally different?

I'd say this one. Gameplay is about the same, but there is some difficulty curve implemented in new lands. Original game dumps you in the wild and throws everything it has at you. In new lands I don't think I saw either the large trolls or the flying horrors on the first island, just plain old mooks and only one or two monster portals. Second island added trolls and had three portals, not sure after that.
Looks like it could have been released already in 1992.

Anyway, how strategic is it? No review so far.

Ah, thanks for the info. The merchant probably didn't die, it was likely my slash-and-burn agriculture that drove him away. :)

I keep making the mistake of expanding too quickly instead of reinforcing my infrastructure. Hopefully on the next play I'll do better. I'm still not seeing overly much difference between the games, but since I like the original it's not a problem for me.

This getting into *SPOILER* territory I think...

Slash and burn is not a wise tactic in this game, period. Peasant villages will disappear in the same way and you will have no place to recruit more, or only remote places. I always leave one tree standing on either side of the village, this will keep them active. It requires more planning and scouting to be able to skip piece of forest and leave it intact, but it pays off.
I will have to get it someday, nice that it's free update.
I very much enjoyed the original release of Kingdom, so I'm sure I'd enjoy this one, though not sure I want to spend the time or money to get it currently. The additions to the game sound good, but, not so much so that I want to get and play it immediately.

If you have the original here then you should have the new one too. Try refreshing your account, in that case.
This is amazing :D Thank you devs, thank you GoG.
Made it much further last night through the game, up to Day 32. Was finally bulldozed by big enemies, though mostly I was let down by my idiotic archers. Instead of manning the forward towers I was building on the side where the attacks were coming from, a bunch of them gathered on the other side of the city and just hung out doing nothing.

This game desperately needs a manual, because it's unclear on how to get townsfolk to do what you need them to, or even if you can.
If I buy Kingdom: New Lands will I get original Kingdom as the original game is no longer available on GOG?

The original Kingdom is a download in your extra goodies. Those who bought it before the release of new lands have it as both extra goodies and a separate game on the shelf.
