Fair enough. While it does seem rather complicated, they are charging full price and one would think that it's their job to figure that out.

ShadowWulfe: Not to beat a dead horse, but the Steam version has achievements and the GOG version does not.

It really should not be that difficult to add it to a visual novel.

omega64: Depends really, I don't know about this one but a lot of Visual Novels use Ren'Py, the problem here iirc is that Ren'Py is open source. But the GOG/Steam code for Achievements can't be public. So someone would have to maintain it and distribute it privately, which you won't see people eager to do for GOG.
That's wouldn't be a problem even if these versions of Higurashi VNs were written for Ren'Py. That engine is distributed under the terms of the MIT licence and thus changes don't have to be disclosed (but they're a bit trivial to decode since it's interpreted python and python bytecode). Ren'Py does support Steam achievements but I imagine nobody bothered to work with Galaxy's non-public APIs.
That being said, it's all besides the point. English-translated Higurashi games are rewritten to use a proprietary engine based on Unity (it's why executables are so bloated and perform poorly on lower end hardware) so this doesn't apply at all. The story of it is rather interesting but your mileage may vary on whether the stated reason behind making a separate interpreter is honest.

In this case they would really have to implement the achievements also on GOG, it would be a 10 minute job.
