What Hollywood hacking should be...

UPDATE: Let the techno-magic of the 14 tracks found in <span class="bold">Hacknet's OST</span> flow through your fingers, as you masterfully execute your digital break-ins!
The soundtrack is 20% off until February 1st, 2:00PM UTC.

<span class="bold">Hacknet</span>, a terminal-based hacking sim for the hidden hacker in you, is available now for Windows, DRM-free on GOG.com.

Is there a hacker buried deep within you? Struggling to be free while you go about the mundane and the usual? Are you woefully short on hacking-sims that let you live out your digital fantasies, or are you just curious to see what it's like?
Hacknet is a game about hacking, an adventure game that mixes the authenticity of a simple command line with beautiful hollywood-inspired interfaces and backends. Underneath these mazes of neon-greens and reds lies an instinctual UNIX-inspired language for you to master, and while those experienced with coding will find some things familiar, prior knowledge is absolutely not required. Between an overarching storyline, sidequests and twists, Hacknet is a game that may surprise you in more than one way...

Hack the world in <span class="bold">Hacknet</span>, available now, DRM-free on GOG.com!

dick1982: don't get it. don't most graphic cards capable of scaling or have the option to change resolution? or are you posting just for the sake of posting again?
I don't know about that but mine sure doesn't and it wasn't me who said font was small before.
Not me
Hmm. Didn't expect this game also released here. I thought it is only on Steam. Well, good news then :)

Wishlist it for now.

Also, just for your information, if anyone want to try the free older not-complete yet version of the game, you can download it here.

i have a shitty GPU/chip on a notebook, and it allows to me to change to many different resolutions, though i have to actually plug into another monitor to use most of those resolutions it supports. not sure about your specs or the other guy you quoted.

EDIT:forgot attachment of screenshot of settings of a crappy intel chip.

Apparently it suffers from game breaking bugs and losing saves according to Steam users.

This game should have the horror genre tag in the description...

Seeing the bluescreen in the video scared me half to death. Had too many bad experiences with that. >_<

JudasIscariot: Please make sure you have the following frameworks/redistributables installed:

.NET Framework 4 Client Profile

XNA Framework Redistributable 4.0
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20914
It would be really, really, really nice if the installer checked that all required components are present. Note that it doesn't have to install it; just notice that it's missing, e.g. put up a dialog saying, "Hey! This game requires the Foo and Bar frameworks from Microsoft; download them from here..."

I've looked at the source code for Uplink. Uplink was written back when 1024 x 768 pixel monitors were luxuriously massive. Sadly, the UI layout is described in terms of pixel counts, and certain UI elements (text boxes, title bars, etc.) assume that the font is a fixed number of pixels in size. So it is not possible, in the general case, to simply substitute a scalable font and expect the thing to work well on a full-HD monitor (or larger) without a massive re-write to the whole UI engine. The best you can hope for is to play it in a pixel-doubled window.

two of the reviews belong in the comments section at the least... and not on the game's page. kind of annoying no matter whether I like the game or not personally.

JLH: two of the reviews belong in the comments section at the least... and not on the game's page. kind of annoying no matter whether I like the game or not personally.
Apparently six people thought 'why would you buy this'; 'for what reason' was a helpful review. (At least 210 of us know better, so there may be some hope for humanity.)
I just tried the demo of this game (actually the alpha version-found in Desura)...and absolutely love it! :D It's way better than Uplink in every way, and I'm sorely tempted to instabuy this one! Heck, I even tried to post a review on the gamepage, but it hasn't showed up (maybe a gogbear ate it!), so here it is for everybody visiting the thread (thank goodness I copy everything before posting it):

Like Uplink, but easier and looks better!

1st note: I played the demos of both Uplink and this game, so I can compare between the 2. So: 1.Uplink doesn't scale well at modern screens and the letters look tiny (which is bad for people with bad eyesight), while Hacknet has a ton of resolutions to choose from and scales well. 2. Now on gameplay: Hacknet's interface is nice and polished, with 3 distinguishable panels showing the currently executed program, the screen of the target pcs and the command line (not to mention the email icon in the top right corner-you receive mails from this Bit character who wants your help). The tutorial is very intuitive and the available anytime "help" command gives a list of all commands available. The music is very nice and puts you in the high-adrenaline-hacker mode (just like Uplink!), and the atmosphere is very immersive (1st pcs you crack belong to script kiddies, and their masculinity complex is satirized via emails found on their pcs :-) ). Also, in the 1st missions at least, I didn't feel the time pressure to quickly get out of the target system before getting thrown out, unlike Uplink (and in fact didn't notice any throwing out). All in all, this game is very immersive and definitely easier and better-looking, in comparison to Uplink.
I give this game 5 stars (and not 4, as would normally happen because I'm usually pretty strict with my gradings and seldom give 5 stars to anything) to balance out all these unjustified bad reviews who didn't even give this game a chance (maybe they thought it was "artsy" or something?). @ everybody else: If you're interested in hacking/cracking, grab this game! (even if you aren't familiar with r-l programming stuff! -I'm not either)

Hopefully, my review will help people avoid being misguided by types who jump the gun on anything that looks different...
Funny how the in-game is based on Unix, whle the game itself is only available for Windows. I'll pass until there is a Linux version.
I could also just hack away from my own machine, but my moral compass won't let me ;-)
So, Hacknet made it and found its way here. Nice. I played an older (alpha) version not so long ago. This version seems to be the fully developed one, I knew the dev was working on it. The alpha version that I played is still available for free on Desura, so check it out if you're looking for a demo of sorts: http://www.desura.com/games/hacknet.

And yes, it's DRM-free. Enjoy.

EDIT: Ninja'd!

Speak for yourself on that point... ;oP I play it at 2560x1600 on a 30" display. I read the text using my antennas. :)

ditto for KoDP. it's "playable". semantics, man.

also that sys. req. for a fake text-game is ridiculous.

original sys req for uplink, and even this seems a bit much for a mostly text game. it only supported OpenGL for some reason.

JudasIscariot: For Uplink, you can just kind of grind some easier missions until you get enough money for some easier missions such as breaking into the Global Criminal Database or the Social Security Database :)

You can just pass the time until some slightly easier missions show up on the mission board :)
You can also do missions and tracking bank transfers too, and when you find one like 1.5 million you can then steal that money if you can override the proxy and be set... :P

Anyways, this looks fun, i'll probably play this soon :)

That is part of the simulation :) It's not a real one :)

Instant purchase as I love this Genre. There are not many titles in this Genre. It all started with C64's "System 15000" then Hacker 1 and 2.

Later we had things like Uplink, Streethacker, and of course the Hacker Evolution Series from ExoSyphen Games, and also the free HackTheGame and now this awesome title.

The ONLY thing missing is not being able to turn my CLI text colour to green, if it had that it would be complete ! :)
