HiPhish: I'm not here to bash or provoke, I'm just curious. Cane someone please explain to me what the appeal of walking simulator is? I mean there are obviously people here willing to buy and "play" it, so someone must be liking it un-ironically.

Here is what I don't get: it's not a game. Sure, it's interactive, but so is a DVD menu. You really just hold W and listen to the story. So what's the point of holding W in the first place? Why not just watch it on YouTube? This is like a movie where you have to keep turning the handle to make the film strip advance, there is a reason why we have machines for that task. What is it that you get out of "playing" this that you wouldn't get if you just watched it?

I'm genuinely curious. This isn't like racing games where it isn't my cup of tea but I still see the appeal. This is literally alien logic to me.
I thoroughly enjoy walking around and taking in an environment, appreciating the thought and design behind it all, without worrying about time constraints or enemies. I also love a good story, so the combination of those two aspects of a game is highly appealing to me.

As far as watching someone else play, they aren't going to focus on the things I would, and they aren't going to take every action I would; so it comes down to wanting to be in control of where I'm going, what I'm looking at, and how long I'm taking doing those things.

Do you consider "Her Story" to be a game? It's a bit of the inverse of a walking simulator, in that you stay in one place. You're just watching video, your only input is keyword searching to bring up clips that match what you ask for. You have to make your own notes, and draw your own conclusions. To me, it's a compelling game, just my wits against the evidence. (I wouldn't have voted it as Game of the Year, though. That was ridiculous.)

In Firewatch, the way you have Henry react to his compatriot changes the story. You do affect your experience of the game in that sense.

I don't know anymore. On the one hand GOG=goodies, on the other one developers these days tend to sell it separately.
Anyway, there's no OST on GOG in any form, so counting on you, GOG! :)

I was pleasantly surprised that both "J.U.L.I.A. Among the Stars" and "The Last Door Season 2" showed up with their soundtracks included as extras. (So did "Never Alone" and "Pony Island" a while back.)

Firewatch is all about exploration (in more sense of the word than one). If you "just hold W" you are really not going to get much out of the game. Granted there is no killing involved, but that should not be what a game is about. It shows how the game medium can do more and different thing than just mindless blasters "for the kidz", but also capable of delivering sophisticated (and grown-up) experiences.

See - it's easy to repackage a concept and accurately capture one of its aspects in a derogatory expression, but that doesn't constitute a proof of anything. It's just an expression of personal approach masquerading as objective discovery. I'm not against objective aesthetical judgements, but they should illuminate and expose as much as there is to capture, not obscure and reduce.

Just one more thing on the list of many things that piss me off about how other people think and talk. Move along.

I concur, people should have the same options for OSTs like on Steam. GOG is pretty inconsistent in this regard, perhaps because OSTs don't sell very well. Still, I hope GOG will get on this.

However, I still found it worth creating a Bandcamp account since that's where a lot of good non-mainstream music is anyway. (for me, of the outrun/synthwave genre)

I haven't played many. Didn't like Dear Esther much, it was too short and obscure, but did like Gone Home and The Vanishing of Ethan Carter.

I find that being involved, stopping to look around and advancing the story at your own pace makes it more immersive, holds your attention better, and makes it easier to relate to than just watching a youtube. Similarly, many good games would make awful movies. In fact, have there been any good game movies?

Silent Hill is great, mostly the atmosphere and special effects.
Don't bother with Revelations though.

No actually, I'm just sick and tired of all the "emotional narrative-driven experiences" as an excuse for having virtually non-existent core gameplay. Also using garbage like "Gone Home" and "Walking Dead" to advertise your game, lol. Also:

"A Note: Firewatch is a video game about adults having adult conversations about adult things. If you plan on playing with a younger gamer, that might be good to know going in."

MATURE GAMES FOR MATURE GAMERS SUCH AS MYSELF

It's a shame because I'm always thought a strategy game about fighting fires would be a great concept.

jcosmocohen: I didn't like the ending at first. But the more I thought about it, and more I remembered what the characters were like throughout the game, the more I came to appreciate it. Just my two cents about the ending, not that it'll change your mind about the walking simulator aspect.
Ya, fair enough. That wasn't the universal opinion, just the majority (at least from the reviews I've read & watched).
