Studying the anatomy of space demons.

Doom 3: BFG Edition is now available, DRM-free on GOG.com, with a 75% launch discount.
Back to reclaim its FPS throne, Doom 3 adds a strong dose of claustrophobic horror into the series' timeless cocktail of explosive action, horrific enemies, and ultra-violent massacre.

The BFG Edition is the game's remastered version, containing DOOM, DOOM II, DOOM 3, and DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil, as well as The Lost Mission.

Feeling nostalgic or just awfully trigger-happy? Check out our Bethesda shooters sale.
The 75% discount will last until August 28, 1 PM UTC.
You might think about classic wads from BFG edition as censored or butchered but for doom fan they provide collector's value being slightly different experience from common versions, also having No Rest for The Living episode. Also since on same sale, Doom2+Final Doom has fixed TNT and Plutonia iwads from rare alternate version of anthology, Depths of Doom so no further patches needed.
Ah that reminds me, for those that want a flashlight mod for the original version, try this mod:

Update on my attempted refund, gog support made a one time exception and gave me a refund only in store credit. Very happy with the outcome.

Leucius: Wow so I was all excited to buy the BFG edition and now I'm sadfaced and wanting to get a refund after reading this thread. :'(
Leucious

don't be put off by negative opinions. i have just come back to this thread after playing through more of the game and it is thoroughly enjoyable, just as good as I remember the original.

The largest single debate about this game is the torch. Love or hate: the ability to manually enable the torch whilst still bearing a weapon or being stuck with just the torch.

Whatever your opinion, the game was heavily criticised at release as being a dark-fest at the time, separately from the issue of torch only wielding. Their is more lighting now, but only in areas that had light before- you still will need to use the torch and in my opinion this does not distract from the atmosphere.

The game runs super smooth at 120fps, the checkpoints can be disabled, the FOV is adjustable.

Whilst some content has been removed, more has been added though I haven't got far enough yet to test either.

There is more ammo etc available- don't want it? Don't pick it up or ramp the difficulty.

OK there is no more EAX support but that is legacy issues with Microsoft and a separate debate.

Seriously, just fire it up and play it, I doubt you will be disappointed.

Thanks.
For me, Doom 3 has been a fun game. I'm only getting back to these sort of games. And alongside Dead Space, Doom 3 has been quite fun - a bit more in-your-face action-horror than Dead Space, though.
Was wondering what are the chances of getting this through GOG Connect - or should I just abandon the Steam version and buy it here...?
A some guy on one Russian forum thread stated against gog's Doom 3 BFG. He claims that Bethesda put some sort of online drm in it and his firewall detects some online checks every game start. If he is blocks this outgoing attempts, his game not even start at all. I'm never used any firewall software on windows myself, do anybody with good firewall can confirm if this is true or not?

I wouldn't hold your breathe with connect.

No reason to abandon the steam version of BFG unless you are having issues with the steam model on principle....although the Gog version does ship with I and II included. Not sure if this is a factor for you.

As far as I know the BFG version always includes Doom 1 and Doom 2 (in edited form). So Steam and GOG should be identical here.

I am using Comodo. BFG works on secure mode and game mode with no problem at all.

tfishell: I wonder if part of the reason the original didn't show up is because of compatibility issues, and GOG didn't want to deal with Support requests or potential refunds. I'd say, just do like you've had to do with games like Populous 3 and I'76: "Works on: Windows (XP, Vista, 7)" or whatever the official supported OSes are. Even put a disclaimer on the page if need be to make sure people see that this version isn't supported past Vista or 7 or whatever.
I don't like how that sounds, if I would be windows 10 user, I would have very little of understanding for GOG to release old game not resurrected enough. (doesn't really bother me, as I have no windows at all at home, so for me the missing linux binary is bigger problem, often making me to not buy many interesting games, internally I decided to not buy win games unless 60+% sale is on them (rather 75+), then I take the sale cut as a fair trade for my increased investment in tinkering with "wine" to try to run them).

Unfortunately I love iD games, and the sale was there, so I bough them, and now I'm figuring out how to run them. The original D3 had linux binary from iD, but I have already seen some source ports for BFG, so now it's only question whether the data files of GOG version are compatible, I will try over weekend.

ANYWAY, to the point....

I think the original D3 can be added without W10 support as "bonus" material to the BFG edition, just like they did with the Falcon game, etc... I.e. give up on the support completely and let people who insist on original gameplay (I would rather want the original too, from the comments it looks as the BFG will be way too easy for me) to put their own effort into playing it on their machines. And sell as "product" only the BFG, which then has to be supported properly.

The original game and expansion are still sold separately on Steam (for $10 combined), so I wouldn't count on it to be added as a free bonus here.

No thanks. We don't need more complaining ala Beamdog EE, neither do we need another excuse to regionally-lock Doom 3 BFG. If GOG is to release the original version of Doom 3, then they should do it as a separate product.

Negative comments about DOOM 3 BFG are way overblown here. First of all more than half of the complaints about this version aren't even applicable anymore, as they were addressed in the first patch of the game five years ago.

I tried both games last night (DOOM3 vanilla, and DOOM3 BFG), about an hour each, and here are my observations

1) DOOM3 BFG runs much better. You can control texture-LOD, FOV, brightness etc all from the menu.
2) BFG edition is still relentlessly dark. There's no drop in tension and atmosphere.
3) Flashlight addition is awesome. This is where DOOM 3 BFG is simply better than the original (unmodified) version. The flash light, only illuminates part of the screen, and charges down quickly too. Even when it's on, the overall image is still dark, and the tension about the monster closets remains the same. By the way, the flash light casts proper shadows and so do all the projectiles (imp's fireball for instance)
4) Sound effects seemed the same in both version. That could also be because I can't turn on EAX, as my XFi Titanium sound card recently died.

I uninstalled the DOOM3 vanilla version, and will try to finish the BFG edition.
Disappointing that the original DOOM3 isn't included or offered.
