You know the thing about chaos? It's fair.

Chaos Reborn, a tactical strategy/RPG of magical battles, is available now DRM-free on GOG.com for Windows, Mac and Linux with a 50% launch discount.

Magical warfare is as much a battle of wits as it is of well-honed skill and pure cosmic happenstance. Sweeping waves of fire, ground-shattering earthquakes or gigantic sapphire dragons may not suggest strong elements of strategic thinking at first glance. Learning how and whether to use each spell, though, that's what distinguishes a respectable spellcaster from a sideshow trickster.

The Realms of Chaos are in constant turmoil and this is your opportunity to outsmart your magic-wielding opponents, both in multiplayer and single-player scenarios. The turn-based combat and the bluffing mechanics call for careful positioning and shrewd misdirection akin to a game of chess or even poker. Βut no matter how well you prepare, be sure to always stay on your toes as the gear customization options and the chances of spell misfires will pose chaotic challenges, resulting in an intense cocktail of mentally engaging fun.

In the press
"Chaos Reborn is quite simply the best strategy game on PC this year" -- Kotaku

“Chaos Reborn is already a brilliant update of an absolute classic.” -- Eurogamer

Utilise your arcane bluffing skills to spread deliberate Chaos Reborn, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 50% launch discount will last until December 30 1:59 PM GMT.

RafiRomero: Dev will, and has on old projects, open source the server if there is ever a need to.
That would be a good idea and definitely more convincing than depending on a proprietary service (and Internet access).

avatar
RafiRomero: Afaik galaxy isn't used by the game at all (you can buy and dload from GOG without it?) and only uses steam to distribute the exes.
Yes, you can buy and download from GOG without Galaxy. And it hopefully stays that way. At least they insist on Galaxy being optional. :P

RafiRomero: Replying on touch screen keyboard, so, a bit terse. Also, you know, is Christmas for me;p
Good enough for me. Thank you very much for your answers! :)

Oh, it's that old and hasn't been a PC game. How could I've been that blind and not seeing the link to the old game on the Wikipedia page. Thank you both!

Here is my review of Chaos Reborn i posted on Steam:

I love this game! It could best be discribed as Magic the Gathering and Warhammer's love child. I say this as the core of this game is wizard vs wizard duels (both PvP with full tournament support and PvE) played on a hex based, procedurally generated, battle field with one hit kills for everything.

The matches start with each player only having their wizard, and a "hand" of randomly selected spells from your randomly generated (for the most part) spell book, which is your deck. Each player then spends the rest of the match moving around the battlefield summoning critters and monsters as well as casting spells in an effort to control the map and kill off the other wizards. Matches themselves, are resonably short lasing 10-30 minutes. A simple concept, I know but there is a lot of depth. As everything is killed in one hit there is no truly useless monsters, and as long as you play smart and have a little luck you can go from an almost hopeless situation to a win, or have your dragon get killed by that rat your rival summoned five turns ago and you forgot about. Another mechanic that adds depth to combat is the Illusion system.

In Chaos Reborn, in general, the more powerful the spell or summon, the lower the chance of the spell working, but summons have the summon illusion option at casting were you can create a fake monster that is just as potent in all ways as a real one and it will always work but with one potentally huge weakness. They can be unmade by a skill everyone will always have access to: Disbeleive, a skill that if used on an illusion, kills it and allows the caster to cast another spell that turn. If it was real; nothing happens and that doubter loses the ability to cast anything else that turn. Thus an illusion heavy army can be wiped out in one turn potenally, and if your willing to gamble on summoning a dragon on turn one, you can trick the other wizard to effectively waste a turn. The right bluff or call of one at the right time can and will win you games!

There is even going to be an ranking system out side of the traditional leaderboard ladders. In it you can have your wizard climb the ranks so that when you're out of game: you become a mid boss in the single player game, be the boss of a level you design (you get bonus exp and gold if they do well at these jobs,) or even be one of the gods that guilds (the game calls them Orders) sacrifice offerings to in hope you will grant them boons in the forms of various buffs or unlocking loot rich levels for them to pillage. Just be careful though, if you start playing poorly you will be demoted.

Thanks for sharing your experiences guys. Haven't been sure what to think about this game, but it's getting clearer now.

I insta-bought it because it`s Julian Gollop.

Not installed it yet though and now I read in a review it needs some code entered on their website to "activate"

If this is true, then it`s a form of DRM and that game should not be published here on GOG. No arguments.

Online mode requires serial key + working master server from developer.
Offline singleplayer is DRM free as far as I can tell (didn't check deeply with all possibilities).

I sort of wonder what would happen if I would try to active the game on my second PC too, etc... may try it later, if it's reasonably done (deactivating the old activation, or running both (but of course only single at the same time in MP)).

These things should be probably well defined in game description on GOG, so one does not have to guess, what are the exact rules for serial key usage.

Well, to be pedantic, it was a PC game. It just wasn't on PCs running DOS or Windows.

@ped7g, I would be very surprised if you needed to deactivate before moving to a new pc. Afaik "activation" is just so the game knows who you are when playing online so it knows who to award xp and gold to etc. That said, I have not tried it.

I see...if it`s only for online mode then it`s a little bit better...but still fishy. There`s plenty of DRM-free games with online component which do not require serials or codes (you can make account with your email or perhaps they use some form of cookies).

Also with DRM free you shouldn`t have to worry about activations - in this system it`s nobody`s business what I do with the game after purchase.

And sure, it should all have been better described on the game`s page.
I'll buy this (x2) if/when it ever supports LAN play. I'm still burned by Age of Wonders 3 saying it has "LAN play" but only via external servers (ie, it doesn't).

EDIT: I just emailed them [the devs] asmuch. You should too. Let them know that central-server-only multiplayer that will vanish who knows when is inappropriate.

You do know that the free "Demo" on Steam has all multiplayer modes? You can play whatever you want for nothing, instead of for £6. Your "equipped mode" inventory has a lower cap (which is no handicap at all) and you appear as a demo player to other PvPeople is the only difference.
I hope I just coined "PvPeople", you're all welcome.

There's actually quite a lot of games on GOG with serial keys for MP. There are also some with dead MP sold as SP only I think? Can't recall any particular.

It's a hard call, this one, if the game requires the master server from developer online, to make the MP available (and it's usually the only reasonable way how to provide match-making and/or server lists), the requirement of serial key (available all the time here at GOG) is next to none additional DRM, as the online master server requirement is much bigger problem. But I don't see many alternatives to this system, especially with new games, which are still in "alive" phase.

Including LAN/WAN setup menu in the game, where the user can specify other player directly, would elevate this tiny bit. But with IPv4 masquerade all over place it's sort of useless for common PC users. Yeah, I'm sure lot of GOG user are far from ordinary, and would very likely work it out trough something like hamachi, etc... but that's probably not a big enough market to change mind of game developers?

Ad steam demo: I'm afraid there are some GOG users who don't plan to use steam at all ever (I'm one), so for us the steam demo is not public. But luckily (for devs) we are probably just negligible minority.

If you want the demo off Steam, it might be good to ask on forum.chaos-reborn.com, I know the devs pay attention to the forum there (might be good to wait until after Christmas, however), I'm not sure anyone will see this thread after Christmas.

Or not. You might want to fix that.

There's a simple alternative, provide a dedicated server for download (ideally with open source) and make the server address configurable in the client.

Not only a tiny bit. It would at least allow you to play in multiplayer mode with friends. Hot seat is not really a good solution for that.
