Battlestation: Harbinger, a challenging mix of strategy, roguelike, and space exploration, is now available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, DRM-free on GOG.com, with a 20% launch discount.

Sometimes space feels like an impenetrable frontier and others like an endless playground full of fighting, explosions, hidden secrets, weirdly-shaped ships, and mysterious encounters. At least when you are looking at it through Battlestation: Harbinger. And that's only part of what awaits you out there. As a new commander in charge of your own fleet, you need to take turn-based decisions about your strategic moves, customize the formation, equipment, and upgrades of your ships, then outwit your enemies in real-time combat. The galaxy is a vast, procedurally-generated place and your missions will get you to unknown corners where danger is the most dependable resident. Do you dare venture there?

Make your way through the dangerous highways and back alleys of space in Battlestation: Harbinger, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 20% launch discount will last until April 28, 12:59 PM UTC.

AdmiralGeezer: Hi! Developer here. The game has roguelike elements and permadeath like FTL. We have tried to randomize a lot of things in the game, the galaxies, missions, enemies, turrets you find, mercenaries etc... If you do die you still get to unlock new ships so there is a little bit of consolidation there :)

Siegor: I'm not usually a fan of permadeath unless it's something like FTL where a playthrough takes 15-30 minutes. Is this the case or does it take longer than that?
Isn't FTL something like around 2 hours? At least over 1 hour if I remember correctly.

Battlestation: Harbinger is around 2 hours if you manage to pull through all 4 galaxies. The ships that you unlock and the fact that the 4 enemy races are thrown against you on random also give some variability, in addition to the other elements I mentioned before.

NotJabba: When they say things like "hidden secrets" and "mysterious encounters," is that just marketing spiel, or is there some other element of gameplay aside from equipping/preparing and combat? Is everything you encounter an enemy that you have to destroy?
There are mercenaries and missions but the game is heavily focused on space battles. The strength of the game lies in the mechanics, how you have to maneuver in the star map and how you utilize all your assets to survive.

That's good, I was afraid it was something like 10-20 hours and if you took a wrong turn you might end up biting more than you can chew...and restart from scratch. 2 hours is actually perfect.
Thanks for the quick reply.
Looks interesting, and the TB part is appealing, I hope the RTS is not too click heavy. Also permadeath is not my kind of thing. It's an unnecessary gimmick to make games appear longer then they really are because you have to start all over again every time you die. I'd rather have a save/load system. Wishlisted for now and probably will pick it up at a later point.

One could argue that permadeath creates a game with higher tension and the need for better decisions. Granted it depends on what kind of game it is, but I personally feel that permadeath should always be an option in games. Not always forced on you, but an option for those that like the thrill.

I find that having the option to save/load allows me to save before I do something and load and do it over until I get the optimal results. After awhile that makes the game boring because no decision ever means anything since it can be undone.

On the topic of this release. This game looks pretty awesome. I'm always a sucker for randomly generated death machines.
Yay! This is a really fun tactical space game that I can't recommend enough!

An FTL like space rogue-lite?
Wishlisted.
Sounds right up my alley.
Whenever I hear/read "FTL like", I`m getting pushed away from that game, cause FTL is nothing but a dice game. Nothing you can do in it has any effect on the game and nothing you do really helps you to win it. It`s all about throwing dice and in most times the rolls are against you.
So, I guess this game is the same, so i`m not gonna buy it. Sorry Devs.
I`m sure you put much effort in this game, but a pure RNG is not what I want when I play computer games. When I want to play a dice game, I meet a few friends and we play a bit Kniffel.
I don't normally buy games I've never heard of until they suddenly get released, but the game's mechanics and favorable comparisons to FTL intrigue me. That and the fact that its developer is active in this forum persuaded me to go ahead and buy it, and now I have it installed and am just starting on one of the training campaigns/missions. Wish me luck!
This looks very interesting. Its more of a turn based strategy RTT mix then roguelike as it seems from looking at the trailer. Wishlisted for now.

I would argue that our game is definitely less dicey than FTL, at least according the feedback I have been reading from players. It can surprise you, but most of the time there should be a "I could have done that differently" moment tied to that.

Thanks for the answer. Sadly, there`s no release stream on GoG`s Twitch channel. I would watch it to find out if this game is for me.
is there any cheats for this as its currently its not playable ive even gone to the easy setting and i get chased down and blown up by an invincible ship and swarms of fighters after 2 jumps??
At least it will be easy to remember the date Battlestation: Harbinger was released on GOG, for it unfortunately coincides with the death of Prince.
Is this game similar to S.P.A.Z.?
Never liked FTL, but will give this a go nonetheless...bought.
