Petrell: Mining and cutting wood does make you become hungry/thirsty faster but you usually do that in areas you've already cleared so you can be starving, dehydrated and tired while doing it and you only need to eat/drink/sleep(or drink tea or coffee) after you've mined enough ore/cut enough wood.
Does this mean that enemies don't respawn? (If so, then that is another reason for me to avoid the game.)

Also, nobody's answered my question about missable stats and (non-)retroactive HP gains.

- Enemies (including animals) do not respawn in Balrum. Nor do rocks you can mine. Trees do near wisps and you can plant most plants.

- Enemies mostly drop random number of stuff you'd expect (deer can drop meat, leather and antlers, skeletons can drop bones, fractured bones, skulls and occsionally rusty swords etc.), some monsters have preset loot.

- Loot in the world is hand placed.

- There is at least 2 cases where you can get extra stat point ONLY if you have exactly 5 points in the stat. If you are over, you're out of luck.

- There are number of skill books in game and you can only use them if you have the requirements (level 1 skill for level 2 skill book) and don't already have the skill at level or above it (if you already have skill 2, level 2 skill book is unusable). Learning skills costs learning points that are finite so you save them using books and waste them if you learn skill when book is available. (skill book locations. Obviously spoilers!)

- I'm pretty sure you get set number of health each level up and 50 per vitality point. If you lose vitality, you lose health and if you gain it you gain health. You can get more health from trainers by spending learning points and there are few other things that can improve your health in game. Mind that I've only played as melee character (chose swordplay at start) but I just tested starting with arcane arts and had less base health and more base mana so it's possible that what combat skill you have affect mana/helth you gain at level up. Also just tested and you do NOT gain the bonus health/mana if you get other combat skill later in game.

- You get one base stat point per level (you have 8 points to distribute at start). Base stats determine what equipment you can wield. You can use learning points to improve your base stats at trainers. There are also few other things in game that can improve you base stats. Majority of your total stats eventually come from your equipment (2/3 or more). Stats given by equipment are bonus stats and do not affect what equipment you can wield (so no, that +5 strenght sword won't allow you to wield that 5 strenght requiring platemail) but as far as I can see otherwise act the same way as base stats.

- You start with 4 skills at level 1 (1 is carpentry and you are given 3 choises each for 3 others skills) and 5 learning points. You get 6 points per level up and there are few books that give you learning points, few that gives skill levels and you can gain learning points from killing certain special monsters. You spend these learning points to improve your skills and stats. As far as I can tell, even if you get all the LP (from level ups, books and monsters) and use all the skill books available, you can't max all skills so build you character accordingly.

- Majority of xp gained in game comes from quests and monster xp only amounts to 20% or so of total xp if you kill everything worht xp and do all quests available to you.

- Max level people who completed this game have achieved is around 12.

Any other questions?

Somehow, whenever I read the title of this game, I have to think of this nice little spot.
Looks interesting. Reminds me I reall should start playing the Eschalon games someday ;-) But really, this game seems perfect to play on a notebook on the road. I will have an eye on this.

Niggles: 40% off is a hefty discount on a new game?. How is it?

amok: it is not quite so new, it was released 6 months ago, and is currently 40% off in the Steam summer sale. so the price matches.

deonast: The real issues with java are if you run it in the browser then it is easier to be invoked. If you ensure it isn't enabled in the browser shouldn't be a real issue.

--- edit, just noticed hyperagathon mentioned the same thing (great minds as they say :)

Martek: You may have missed my <i>other post</i> about Java.

While there certainly are security issues with regards to running Java in a browser session - there are also security issues with running the "Standard Edition" on the desktop.

I might make an exception to software that runs a "runtime" version of Java - that ONLY runs when that particular software runs; and then exits when that software is closed. BUT this software <i>requires</i> a separate desktop Java runtime to be installed.

No-way, no-how I would allow such a security risk to be installed (particularly for just a game).

It's too bad the authors chose to go that route. Well, at the very least (for them), it appears that most game-purchasers (judging by posts ITT) don't really consider the risks to be too-risky. Good for them. But speaking for myself; I won't allow it...
I can see your point and Oracle hasn't been the greatest steward in making a secure release of java. I run java for one app only, but ages ago I made sure there were no browser plugs enabled and I run a reasonably tight ship on my desktop that it is unlikely I'm going to download something that takes advantage of JAVAs security flaws so for me I'm ok with what the game's dependencies. Oracle really do need to take a year and just focus on bug and security architectural work on java.

Actually I'm now starting to agree with you more, I forgot oracle are buggers, I just noticed in my java applet settings it says turned on in the browser and I had turned that off ages ago so they must have switched it back on with an update. Luckily the browsers I have installed have it disabled / removed it in the addons,

You are right java is bad and with oracle updating it you can't trust it, as they do some sneaking settings changes.

Raizo886: I honestly think it's the publisher/developers responsibility to choose where their game is going for sale.
If it's not on GOG, it's hardly GOG's fault. Steam s is after all the number one go to place for PC games. GOG generally isn't the first thing that pops into most PC gamer's minds, although I believe GOG is on its way there.
All I know is that GOG refused publishing several titles I was very happy to buy. Also, from what I heard the terms aren't always encouraging, but that's obviously hear-say because NDAs.
Oh my, reading about it this sounds like bloody good fun. Recent sales drained all the current funds but I'll be keeping my eye out for this. Love games where the mobs don't respawn and you really feel like you're making progress fighting your way into the map.

Petrell: *snip*
Thank you, this is all very helpful info!
Good price + good impression from the videos I found in YouTube = bought.
And I've great interest in isometric RPGs since I discovered Fallout.
Thanks for bringing this here, gOg!
I can't seem to get the game to run in GOG Galaxy or directly from the desktop. Has anyone had this problem. Any solutions? I've looked on line and found that steam users are having the same problem. Sounds like the game is having issues.

Working perfectly here.
Your best bet is asking for help to gOg staff, they are more likely to be able to point where the issue lies, and how to fix.
Don't forget you have the right to ask for a refund, in the worst case.
But I doubt the staff won't be able to help you.

Have you tried installing the latest version of the JRE from Oracle's Java website?
