A legend remastered.

ADOM (Ancient Domains Of Mystery) is now available DRM-free, 10% off until October 11th, 3pm UTC.

Choose your class (like a rogue). Kill some beasts (like a rogue). Meet a new race (like a rogue). Get corrupted (like a rogue). Craft potions (like a rogue). Kill bosses (like a boss).
All in this deep, complex, and infinitely rewarding turn-based roguelike with strong RPG elements and a sprawling world to explore.

Lexor: Did I read it right that this version of ADOM used Unity as game engine?
avatar
VexingVision: No, that's Ultimate ADOM you're thinking of, the sequel that's planned for Kickstarter early next year.

This one still contains code from 1994.
Ah. Does ADOM use any other engine or was fully self-coded by the author?

It uses a mixture of two different custom engines: One of them is older and does not support graphics. It also uses a modified version of NotEye as a graphics engine. AFAIK the author of NotEye has become part of the ADOM team.
IIMHO now the news section has no point. Unless you want to post something on the comments section. There's on the front page the sections Now Available and See What's New for a quick glance at evertyhing new. And I like them.

Have a nice day.

HunchBluntley: I tried the free version earlier this year, but couldn't get into it.
I think part of the problem I had with it is just the concept of "open-world roguelike". I like each of those two things on their own (when done well), but I prefer my RLs to be more focused -- "go down through this one dungeon, get the thing/kill the boss, and escape in one piece."
Also starting to really dislike the "perpetually in development for decades" model. It's somewhat understandable for free and open-source games, but at some point, I still like a game to be done -- stable and definitive.
In a game like ADOM that is worked on by an enthusiast for many years, constant development can create a very deep, rich, and polished experience with a permanent community of fans. It's not a half-complete game that will never be finished. It's a gradually evolving game with a lifetime of content to discover on the way to winning it.

Mr.Mumbles: I suppose I should finally give the slightly older and free 3.0.6 version a try that's available from the ADOM site.

Out of curiosity, is there actually any drastic difference between that one and the paid-for version?
There's a list here. Most of the differences are gameplay options and the kind of features associated with leaderboards.

Holy shit yes!!!!

Waldschatten: I almost got squashed in an earthquake because I was scared the power would go out and I'd lose my progress :)

Lexor: Wow, that's a real... dedication? :D
I scooted over into a doorway at least :)
Well, I finally gave the free version a try and lo and behold the same thing happened that happens to me with practically all roguelikes: I got bored in no time flat. I guess these game just aren't for me. *shrug*

Woa ADOM.
Nice, but it's such an unforgiving roguelike..
I see there's a UI now, thank god.

I remember playing ADOM once...
I moved south, died, and went back to Dungeon Crawl.

I liked playing with corruption, could turn yourself into a major beast if you found a corruption trap early on and activated it repeatedly, though it could come back to haunt you later on if you lost because you became too corrupted.
nice release GOG

Somehow the brain adapts soon enough.

Spiders are nothing, but a good source of poison resistance. Instead, I still have nightmares of capital V's. And those cats.

Snakes, actually. The color made the difference between snakes and large and giant spiders.

Enough to put a new character on his/her toes.

Had lots of fun with ADOM back when there was little in the open sky world, which means besides the underground few (but deep!) dungeons.
