CMOT70: It's actually a hybrid turn based/RTS mix. Sort of like the Total War games in a way. I
Appearance might indeed call for that comparison. But AP is a tad more realistic,, ( a tad as in modelisation of ballistic factors ) and the theatre remains relatively limited, so the gaming experience is vastly different. As a tactical game it's much more challenging, and the look and feel is rather Close Combat's than Total war.'s..
comparable games to this title in gogs catalog?

I really think the closest one is

As far as I know, this series is what the developer of Achtung Panzer / Graviteam Tactics was inspired by, and trying to make something similar.
Close Combat or Combat Mission would be the closest (fairly) well known comparisons for APK43. I'd personally never call that type of game an RTS because there's far too much suggestion of it being a Red Alert type game or even Men of War from that label; it's mid way between accessible and grognardy, and realistic. It also largely lacks 'cool' unrealistic units so you wouldn't be playing with dozens of tigers, panthers and nebelwerfers vs ISU-152s, KV-2s and IS-3s. Personally, I really liked it overall. Having said that, it always looked like a game where the sequel would be and actually is better and the scale is a bit off much as having 50ish bloke battles decide Market Garden was in Close Combat 2. Hopefully OpStar will turn up here, it is DRM free elsewhere and is very good.

CMOT70: It's actually a hybrid turn based/RTS mix. Sort of like the Total War games in a way. It has a turn based aspect at operational level and then real time for tactical resolution of combat. I haven't played it, so i can't comment on if it's good or not, but i like the idea.

Also the series seems to now be continued by Matrix Games, with what looks to be a more updated version called Operation Star sold by them. I'd like to try this but i'm not sure whether to go with the discounted GOG/Paradox version or what looks to be the more updated and more expensive Matrix version.

I've seen it get a significant discount a couple of times ($5 I believe was the cost) and would expect it to get another discount during their next sale.
Yeah that's the game i was thinking of, but this version http://www.matrixgames.com/products/428/details/Achtung.Panzer:.Operation.Star .Same game just different distribution it seems. Though, at regular (non sale) pricing the Matrix digital version at AUD$29 compared to Steam US$29 means for an Australian the Matrix version is 25% cheaper due to the sorry state of our currency.

The launch discount will last for five days, until Tuesday October 3, 1:59 PM GMT.

Mr_GeO: <using my best Doc voice after checking today's date> MARTY, WE HAVE TO GO BACK!

But joking aside, how is RTS part of this game? Are tank stats are somehow "realistic" or it's just a bunch of good looking names (KV-1 ftw!) slapped on generic "tank-from-every-rts" model?
I own this game and it is no way RTS. This is a hard core turn based game with a RT combat layer. Sort of like total War Games but the strategic map is a lot more simplified. But unlike Total War games this is very realistic like Combat mission CMBO also on this site. CMBO is much easier to play than this title though.

This is worth getting only if you want to learn it, it is not pick up and play. The graphics are way better than CMBO and the maps are based on real world ones.

This is a real War Gamers title and I recommend it as such.

The forum to go to for game help till it is established is here.

Seems like an interesting RTT/turn based hybrid game. Will keep an eye on it. Hoping for a rts release soon.

IAmSinistar: Mmm, more RTS goodness!
I'll probably buy this now, but I admit I prefer RTS games where you mine gold or blue crystals or spice in order to produce more tanks and planes. I presume that didn't work in WWII just like that.

EDIT: Ok now saw marklaur's message above, so good to know what to expect.

Agreed, this seems much more suitable that the typical RTS mechanism.
I have the entire Graviteam series, I'm really happy they're coming to GOG!

Luned: I had an even worse thought process... I went from "Attention, Panther!" to "Hey, cat!" to... wait for it...

"Hello, Kitty!" That mental image was priceless:
I might hold off unless they put in a Hello Kitty paint job on the tank.

Does the game accept mod paint jobs?
Errm, what happened, this was on my wushlist, today i looked to see if it was on discount and it had dissappeared and now i can't even find it for sale on the site at all ?
