A grand expansion for X4: Foundations is close at hand. X4: Cradle of Humanity DLC is now available in pre-order on GOG.COM. This title will bring the cult series from Egosoft back to Earth, while at the same time significantly increasing the size of the game's universe with new sectors.

fridgeband: Last I heard they're still working on the main game. Is that true? I'm afraid I may be simply pre-ordering a refund, so I'll play it safe.

Edit: okay so apparently the game does appear to be done.

however the most helpful review from Mordhar is titled:

"WARNING! Not really DRM-free."

And enya has just entered the chat because I sailed away sailed away sailed away (far away)

chew-ie: Yeah, those over-alarming reviews which try to be an early DRM detection system. All it sometimes takes is a "dev wants you to register your game" mechanics & they'll fire.

While I certainly appreciate the effort to keep GOG the way it was meant to be [and why we are buying here] I sometimes wish authors would do a proper review of those stark opinions. Especially years after the release.

In fact the current beta proves that everything which is described in this review can be aquired without the online component. Simply because it was disabled for the beta builds and the players still were able to e.g. get the purple modding components. The whole mission rewards got a revamp so the review is at least outdated.
So you're saying that the DRM is completely fake and made up? That's really good news if it's true, because DRM is terrible. Even if that's not an issue here, I'm really not pleased with a few other reviews that don't mention DRM but rate the game low for other reasons. I'll just play it safe and skip this one. The game is a bit too expensive for me anyway considering everything.

I wouldn't call it a fake - but a huge exaggeration. Which is outdated.

About the other ratings - X games are always jack of all trades, master of none. And they are not your usual game formula. So very little handholding, set your own goals and make yourself at home in the game world. This is bound to have some critics - as it isn't everybodies cup of tea. That's also the reason why X games are considered niche games & Egosoft is finally a indy developer nowadays.
Hi all

the DRM that is contained within X4 is not an exaggeration. As to it being outdated, then why does the following warning still apply on the gog storepage, see attached image.

That's what I meant with exaggeration. I know there are always groups who see things a lot more strict (binary) then others. (happens @linux all the time and for ages :D) Putting the DRM flag on X4 Foundation is a decision by that group, not an official one by e.g. GOG.

The "warning" (labeled description btw) shows how to get additional features and rewards. That's marketing - no DRM. The notion of the "highest rated drm warning review" also fears Egosoft going the route of other studios by introducing a ingame currency as soon as the spotted the EC-label in the game (EgoCredits). Thing about those - they never were fully introduced. So exaggeration again.

I can't stress it enough - I appreciate the time & effort going into this DRM watch. I merely say that flag is a hard binary one while the trigger is not. You just swap a mod into the game and have everything. And I'm still able to archive the whole game in my backup and restore it (along with that said mod) and never ever need a internet connection nor anything else.

I hope this provides some more additional info and everybody can now make a more informed decision. Life strifes for balance, not one-sidedness.
Now out.

Now waiting for the installers to show up. Please GOG, this week, alright.

I hope this will be this month. :(
It's already 5 HOURS after release and those lazy bums at GOG are still incapable of producing a decent stand-alone installer. Jeez!

I noticed this a few times, but I really get the idea the delay the installers on purpose to force us to use Galaxy. The more times they do that, the more I starting to hate that Galaxy garbage. If I install Galaxy and start it up, it immediately going to "update" my modded games, rendering all my modding work useless. I do not even get the chance to change that setting, because by the time I do that it's already to late, and hours of work goes down the drain.

So - WHERE ARE THE STAND-ALONE INSTALLERS?
Already 14 hours after release and still waiting for the stand-alone installers. Shame on you GOG!

GOG.com:
Thank you for the relatively quickly updated offline installers. I hope you did not forget about the two DLCs for Linux as they are not up yet.
Still no 4.00 update.
Way to go, GOG!
high rated
We are really sorry about the delay of the offline installers, they are available now. We will do our best to not let it happen in the future. As for Linux we are currently investigating the issue, I will let you know once they are live.
Thanks! That is good enough for me.
