Smannesman: I always buy pre-orders because I'm afraid they'll run out of copies.

LOL.
In a way, they do - some games (quite a few) have exclusive stuff available only for people that preordered.
That version of the game is temporary, they 'run out of copies' after an pre established amount of time has passed.
Now, if the minor additions are worth the price you're paying or not, is up to you.

Elmofongo: I just pre-order because I want to ensure I have the game already when it releases because I don't know if I will get payed on the month of release day.
So what would happen if you didn't have the game the second it's released?
I don't care much about consumer rights, so I had to ask myself why I hate pre-orders so much? I think it is sort of the same reason I hate a lot of other things, too:

- Gaming clients
- DRM
- Software shields hiding the actual installation files (Android/Steam)
- Windows hiding the file extensions
- Rift being locked to the Oculus store as default
- Executables with purposefully obtuse names (The pen software on Windows Surface is called Surface)
- Facebook ("DRM for social interaction")

This is all stuff that takes power away from the PC user, making them less competent. Pre-orders are used to steer people toward buying at a time where they have less information available than they are going to have after the release. It is a way to award people for acting dumber than they are, giving more power to hype and marketing.

contra_cultura: I don't see the point in the rant. Honestly, why should pre-releases be an anti-consumer practice? It's basically a choice for the consumer to make, an option. Especially when we're talking digital games here, at this time when the consumer has access to multiple sources of information and the post-buy option to ask for a refund, it's more a choice than a dark-side trick to make you buy games before you realize the game is bad.

Giving a free game with a pre-order is quite an incentive to buy when a game you like is released instead of buying it when it's on sale. You can basically choose if you care for the extra game or if it's just better to wait for a discount. Why is that anti-consumer? If you trust the developer then it's an option to consider, if you don't, just wait for your trusted source of reviews. Calling this an anti-consumer practice is practically saying all consumers are dunces, and if they are, well, that's their own problem to solve.

Also, let's note that GOG is offering an extra game if you pre-order, this ain't a shady practice like for example what CA did with Total War: Warhammer. The game isn't less of a game if you pre-order it or wait to buy it after reading your trusted reviews.
For the same reason that rent-to-own and payday loans are anti-consumer: it diminishes the purchasing power of people that tend to be impulsive and don't know how to make their money work for *them*.

Chandoraa: <snip> are ever going to believe that preorders are a good thing or that they can be done "right"
When I first saw the news post, my thinking was that those titles had demos available here on gOg. To me, that would be the way to do it 'right'.

----

If they're going to offer pre-orders - which they obviously are - then I don't see anything wrong with throwing in a store freebie along with it, so long as the freebies are not pre-order exclusive. Exclusive content before the game can even be played, that's just crap. But the games they're giving out with the pre-orders are available to everyone for purchase, so I don't mind that particular bonus.
As long as preorders don't contain exclusive in-game stuff, I don't really care. If people want to buy them it's fine for me.

Strijkbout: I'm selling land on newly discovered planets by the way, if anyone is interested.

Breja: Amateur. I'm selling land on undiscovered planets. I've got way more to sell, and better prices! And a bonus air guitar with every purchase!
Throw in a few WLAN cables and I'll buy it!

This, I find it difficult to ignore preorders when they come with ingame stuff. If it's anything else I usually don't care about it.

That said, these days I don't really worry about my preorders because I can still refund them after the game comes out, giving me time to see the reviews/responses and judge what state it's in.

...

What the hell, why does the 'Money Back Guarantee' not apply to preorders, after release, that haven't been downloaded yet? I can see a case for them after having been downloaded but this is anything *but* "Preorder done Right" with the current policy.

11. WHAT ABOUT PRE-ORDERS?

You can cancel pre-orders at any time before the game's release, and get the money back.
Edit: Ow... I guess the refund if you haven't downloaded it yet is a courtesy service since it's not mentioned in there at all...

mecirt: Eh, just don't buy the game until there are reviews available, pre-oredering is not mandatory.
But the "just don't buy the game as a preorder" idea/counterargument does nothing to stop preorders from being cancer to gaming. Because some people will buy preorders, which therefore encourages publishers/developers to continue releasing terrible games, since preorders teach them that they can collect lots of money in exchange for those terrible games, no matter how terrible they are.

In other words, gamers who think that preorders don't affect them just because they personally don't waste money on those preorders are missing the bigger picture. The cancer of preorders is still affecting them by drastically lowering the quality of the games which are available to them.

In an ideal world, preorders would be banned by law.

Uh.. yea... let's pass lots more laws that ban other people from doing stuff we ourselves don't want to do. There can't possibly be anything wrong with that idea. I for one absolutely look forward to the world where all the fat geeks are required to lose weight, keep in shape, and must be able to do at least 15 pull ups or be thrown in prison.

The same law that has brought ruin to this nation by making it's people dumb, blind, and uncaring?

In an ideal world, people would be acutely aware of the necessity of maintaining virtue, as it is the only thing that will prevent corruption from taking root and destroying everything that is worth having.
There are two types of games I will always pre-order if I have the money, because no matter how bad they are, I know I will still want them and play the heck out of them:

Star Wars games and Zelda games.
Lol, c'mon, man. You're getting free shit. Good shit, even. If you don't want to preorder, then don't. But at least acknowledge GOG doing something good when they do it.

The thing is, if you would have bought the freebie anyway then you are basically getting a brand new game on Day 1 at 75% off... that is really not a bad deal.
So what if the game turns out to be not great? I've bought lots of games that have been out for years at lower discounts and higher prices than that and I've not enjoyed them, despite reviews and recommendations.

I'm generally on the side of pre orders are stupid and pre order exclusives particularly annoying, but this is genuinely a good deal from Gog and I don't see what all the hate is about...
