tremere110: Maybe in Poland. Here in the USA not having Facebook means no job.

tinyE: No it doesn't. :P

I run a wildly successful B&B. Prior to that I was a manager of a bookstore.

I have never and will never have Facebook.

I also don't have a cell phone so let me stop anyone from bringing that up right now. XD
A B&B in the Islamic Republic of Iran? Is the B&B for Beheading and Bombings? I kid, it's just a joke!!

fables22: Hey everyone,

This is just a friendly reminder to everyone involved in this thread - please be mindful of what you post in this thread and how. I have nothing against threads and posts discussing politics, but this thread is well on its way to becoming another one of the threads that attract serial breaking of the forum rules and eventually have to be closed. Thanks!

budejovice: Us "sub-humans" think perhaps it might have been locked some time ago.

But seriously. White people. Why do they smell so bad in the rain? Like wet dog. It's really weird. So much for superiority.
WTF? I've been told that I smell like pizza!

Given how much I despise JonTron, this just increases the game's value to me.

Starmaker: (Note 2: but this is a critique of Facebook, because at this point it's essentially an utility. People shouldn't be denied running water because they said a naughty word, even if they signed a "yes, you can deny me running water if I say a naughty word" contract.)

Breja: It may surprise you, but it's actually fully possible, and in fact easy and in no way inconvenient to live without facebook. Shocking, I know. Hope you were sitting down :D
Living without Facebook?! But that's like living without...Actually I can't think of anything good that fits here without being offensive or too extreme. Anyway, yeah, social media is garbage and living without it is both easier and better in my experience.

On top of taking issue with his viewpoints numerous times, his schtick just really grates on my nerves. Like a less screechy Pewdiepie it's all trite, unfunny jokes, cringey attempts at lolrandom and self deprecation all delivered with insufferably forced shouting, flailng and no sense of comedic timing.

As I mentioned I don't like Pewdiepie or JonTron's humor for the most part either. Still what I've heard is they are both decent guys.

Far more important than judging someone from their words is to judge them based on their actions.

Can't stand pew (though that doesn't mean I want to see him censored or lied about) but I've enjoyed JonTron since his Daikatana video. Never really followed him too closely though.

He seems entirely reasonable to me. Once again fairly reasonable opinions/people are being demonized by the media/certain groups and we become more and more divided.

This fellow doesn't seem to be hysterical or hyper-reactive, nor does he seem to be ideologically driven. He *does* seem to be modestly thoughtful and fairly objective. So I'm wondering: why do so many of us get sucked into accepting ideologically driven political rhetoric at face value -- left and right -- and defend it as though it's absolute truth?

I see an awful lot of people these days that clearly feel threatened, but very, very few that are savvy enough to ask themselves why. Mostly I see people pointing fingers at various ethnic or issue driven groups, so quickly that it seems almost an involuntary response. And when anyone asks them why, they almost invariably become defensive, as though their behavior is perfectly normal and healthy.

The average level of awareness is so minimal that we are incapable of checking ourselves. The best we can manage is to demand that others do so -- but never ourselves -- and this troubles me immensely because I see nothing that suggests that we know where we're going. And we're too afraid to open our eyes and look.

Social media is garbage, but

(1) many companies expect you to not only have an account but friend your boss, follow your company and repost company ads. If you say you don't have one, they assume you do, but it's full of furry porn or something.
This is very likely illegal, but even with a clear highest court decision, it still screws your employment / promotion prospects.
edit: and if you can convince them you don't have one, they'll assume you're mentally ill and thus unfit for the job. There's a huge market for "psychometric test" scams to sell to idiots in hr using data science buzzwords, and if they can't even sic their crawler on your social media page, hello funemployment.

(2) social media can be where your audience is and where you have to organize whatever it is you're doing (politics, consumer rights, marketing, art, etc). If the choice is "flip burgers, write in spare time, sell a copy per month" vs "write ful-time, sell 10k copies per month, have a facebook account" (or even "keep your self-hosted blog that's only visited by ad bots" vs "overturn corrupt government, become prime minister", I'd choose the latter.
My (nonpolitical) organization went from its own website to a third-party website to yet another third-party website and Telegram. Membership is soaring. Unfortunately, that's what works. Running our own website does not.
I hate it. I pay "screw social media" +100% surcharges on fees.

(3) social media can be where your friends and relatives are. If impersonal-your position is "i hate facebook so screw you, mom, die alone", maybe go screw impersonal-yourself.

Considering how many other ways to stay in touch exist, I firmly belive that yes, if no facebook means you can't be arsed to stay in touch with me by phone, skype or email or even good, old fashioned mail (it still exists!) then yes, screw you.

Yep, sounded reasonable to me too. Decent clarification of what he meant, and admits he isn't a good debater.

The fact that everyone is taking tiny snippets to demonize someone (anyone) is not a healthy trend and needs to stop.
