I don't see this one as being as useful as the SNES and NES classics.

For one thing, original working PS1's are not rare and not expensive. Just looking on Gumtree in a 50km radius brings up 10 PS1's for sale that are listed as working and priced well under the Classics price, plus with original disc games in the bargain. The original games are still cheap, common and durable.

The SNES and NEs had enough extra storage to hack and load hundreds of extra games and make them into really convenient plug and play retro machines. The PS classic will not have much extra space and ROM's are way bigger.

Old 3D PS1 games look shit on modern flat screens. You really need to use an emulator to up the internal resolution, the Classic does not appear to have the power to do this. Or you play on my awesome CRT monitor with original equipment. Old 2D games don't age anywhere near as badly.

Having said all that, they will sell out immediately, as the Sony army is huge and loyal and would buy the CEO's turds if they bottled them and offered them for sale.. And todays pro Sony gaming media will be having orgasms. I'm thinking of ordering one anyway, keeping it in the box and selling it to a Pony for like $300, 2 days after they sell out, but before the next batch is announced. No, make it $400. I'm off to my EB to pre-order.

PS: is this the exact same Sony that, 2 years ago at E3, when asked about their answer to Microsofts backward compatibility on Xbox, said something along the lines of: "why would anyone want to play those old games, they look terrible!". True story.

And knowing Sony they'll probably find some way of having the unit punch the purchaser in the nose.

TBH, it's hard to get too interested in these mini-systems as the number of games is fairly short and unlikely to contain only games that interest the buyer.

Personally, I went the Retro Pie route with replica controllers and it's a far more reasonable thing. Especially in this case where it's $100 for 20 games, which I may or may not want.

Agreed. I have copies of the games I want. I downloaded roms from the ones I couldn't dump.i just emulate them on my tablet instead of a retropie though. I got a 8bitdo controller and I can play all my Genesis, GB, GBA, SNES, NES, DS, PSX, PSP, and Master System games.

Deal breaker for me here on this release is if most of these staples are not there then it's a no buy, Metal Gear solid, Gran Turismo 1 or 2, Spyro 1, crash 1, crock, GEKX 3D, Resident evil 2, Twisted metal 1 or 3, tomba 1,

This can really flop for me, maybe I have a high expectation out of the box for the price and plus sony here, I am sure they can get there hands on these to put in the system. What made me upset in the SNES classic was the lack of Mario allstars and other little titles I am sure others know is missing. well I can bet this thing will be hacked right away to put more roms in it. or sony did something unique with how the games are done on here.

Just rerelease PS1 and PS2 hardware with upgrades (a hard drive for caching the game to disk, upscaling, etc). I have my disks, but, sadly, my console broke. Emulation gets so far, but...

I hope they don't fill this thing with games easily obtained via recent collections, remasters, GOG, etc - Crash Bandicoot, Final Fantasy, Mega Man, Tomb Raider, Soul Reaver, Street Fighter, probably others. I'd rather see some popular titles that aren't available outside of PSN or emulation.

But on the other hand, I can imagine someone thinking it should be a "best of PS1" regardless of current availability of the games.

Either way, twenty games seems too few given the massive library of games for the system. Any "filler" games are likely to garner resentment for taking the place of a better title that could have been included.

Spyro has his remake coming from Activision's hand.. also Medievil Remastered was announce a year ago (but since then Sony remains silenced)
and Gex gameas also would be cool on a N64 mini.

I guess many people is waiting to see MGS, Silent Hill, SOTN but any Konami games (since that alliance between Kojima and Sony) seems impossible.

I guess we* going to get games like Parappa the Rapper, Twisted Metal 2, Gran Turismo and with luck more Enix or Square Soft Jrpg but.. who knows?!

I'm guessing it's probably going to be mostly limited to scea published games. though I guess namco's willing to play ball.

and yeah I wouldn't really expect to see crash or spyro because of the collections.

Intelligent Qube would be nice to have on there. Or Devil Dice. The nintendo classics are lacking in good puzzle games (argh no lolo or solomon's key).

I thought they were a clear improvement. They had analogue sticks, which were necessary for some games, and for others where simply convenient (and for still others, unnecessary). They had the haptic feedback aka rumble feature, which I found reinforced the visual and auditory feedback nicely. Finally (and this is arguably a quite subjective point) they were heavier than the original controllers, which made them feel more comfortable and less flimsy to me.

My son and I replayed the original trilogy on my old PS a couple of years ago.
Gameplay still holds up perfectly.
And, thanks to the use of gouraud shading instead of detailed textures, the graphics hold up surprisingly well too.

I really should get around to backing up the best of my old PlayStation CDs before bit-rot eventually kicks in.

Like the Nintendo Classic Mini, this is a mere attempt to cash-out on "brand".
These devices have little value as they do not associate with what they are trying to represent (*) and their long-term value will decline rapidly. Basically you will be much better building the retroconsole yourself, with additional benefit of it having standard ports and standard (read: cheap) hardware parts. And Logitech joysticks are pretty good.

What Sony and Nintendo could do differently - is to reborn the original classic platform, but with new components, new interfaces, whilst supporting the very same standards; kind of "classic" direction. This means proper hardware, proper slot system - but also means that it will cost the company much more for production, and also for support. Such hardware would have much higher aftermarket value, because it sticks to the original family. And this is where they depart from what consumers want, they do not want to invest - they want to cash out.
