That's because some games age like wine!
(not that I really agree though).

Maybe newer games are marketed with high base prices and deep discounts in mind, and they also expect more sales, so getting a little from each, at a low price, still adds up, while old games are for a niche audience so in order to be worth the trouble a higher profit per unit sold is expected. And then there's the question of any work that had to be done for those old games and, probably more so, what deals had to be struck to get the rights to sell them.

Maybe. Problem is, niche or not GOG still have competition from "elsewhere". I won't link to it but there's an ongoing Ziggurat "Hidden Treasures" bundle on Steam (10x DOS games for £9, ie, 90p each, including the same Mission Critical, Les Manley collection, etc) sold here for £4.50 each on 'sale'. Now I won't be buying it as I own half those games already but whenever I go to recommend GOG sales like these to a friend who's into DOS gaming, the response is going to be like "Nice but when it's 14% off GOG vs 82% off Steam for the same games, that's really a no-brainer isn't it? None of them are really "niche" they're just games that happen to be old..." I think GOG really needs more bundles / "Build Your Own" collection here, or other stores are just going to run away with the sales with these disparities.

GOG definitely needs more BYOBs. Many games on Steam come with their only little BYOBs and at least for the games that I'm looking at, the number of buy a bundle where the games that you already own are discarded are declining (except for the Lego games), while GOG gets flooded with the useless bundles.

In any case the Steam bundles price is the sum of the (discarded) products with an additional discount. GOGs modern bundles have a fixed preset price that does not change with the current prices of the individual parts. The recent Warhammer 40k bundle's price was ridiculously high.
