overread: Nikon have indeed bought into it, but they also used an even smaller sensor than the M4/3rds and from what I gather many are less than impressed with what Nikon is offering over the higher end Olympus or Sony offerings.

That said whilst newer ones are high in price you can probably pick up a, still very good early EP series from Oly without too much cost.

The market pricing is a bit odd on them, but I think it works for targeting the more serious amateur who wants the "SLR" experience but without all the bulk; whilst also appealing to the DSLR/SLR user who has all they need and wants a quality point and shoot that is familiar to operate compared to their DSLR.

hedwards: I'm probably more biased than I think I am because I can't imagine why anybody would want anything much smaller than a Rebel. My current Powershot SX40 HS is almost too small for my large man hands. My 10D was pretty much perfect in terms of size.

But, then again, I have huge hands and if they were any bigger I could palm a basketball. I was literally able to do it once with some effort.

But in terms of price and form factor it just seems awkwardly positioned.
My only serious quarrel would be with the price point. The cost being almost identical to snagging a Rebel is a deterrent if you are in a position to only get one camera, but I personally would like one as a walking around camera as my Rebel just really isn't something I want to cart around casually.

I also see the attraction in not having mirror assembly. My mirror has stuff on it and the viewfinder is very difficult to verify critical focus with. I also suspect it is responsible for some vibration that shows up in some of my shots. Its a very violent action I can feel. Way quicker and louder than the original Digital Rebel.

cw8: Not sure if I wanna get one of those for my DSLR. The tripod I have atm weighs a few kgs and it's a pain to lug around.
avatar
Reveenka: Well, if you think your current tripod is too heavy, then that's a reason to look into the GorillaPod. If weight is the most important factor for you, then GorillaPods should be way up on your list, unless you have hundreds of dollars to spend on carbon fiber tripods.
.... snip
I know you didn't ask for tips regarding tripods, but this is my passion, and once I start it's hard to stop, hehe. That's why I'm in photography - I can blabber on and on all day, and all my fellow students are interested and equally invested.
I bought that heavy tripod for about $100. Carbon Fibre ones are definitely out of the question since buying one is equilvalent to getting a PS3. And I'm probably just taking photographs when travelling which doesn't happen often. I'm more into landscapes than anything else.
The GorillaPod should be able to hold steadily a DSLR body with a 10-22mm Ulrawide lens right? If so I'll probably get one in the near future. My exposures sometimes go to 8 seconds or more so I need something stable.

Haha, don't worry, it's always great to hear more on Photography from enthusiasts and experts. :)
Currently using a Nikon D50 (bought in 2006, still chugging), a few primes, and rarely an F100, some Velvia loaded up, though I'd love to get some more Ektar.

Uhm....GOG's forum software doesn't support BBCode img tags? WTF? No wonder I didn't see any pictures inlined in the whole first page! :( I don't wanna attach any of them, so click away......

I went to take some photos today and found that my dog had destroyed my filter folder and smashed all my filters... Now to find atleast a new polarizing filter >.<
One of the best things someone can do is look at, and follow photographers doing the kind of work you would like to be doing. A lot of pros have blogs now and lots of images to check out. Here are some photographers I know of that I like. Hope they don't mind me pointing them out.

I thought that I wasn't going to be able to see the eclipse due to local clouds/pollution so I missed the first bit of it. But, I did manage to snag these photos.

Cloud cover was sufficient that I could take photos and look without squinting, so I deemed it safe enough to point the camera directly at. Didn't even need the welding visor I bought the previous day, or even sunglasses.

I don't know if they'll show up, but I did get close enough to see some sun spots, which is quite cool.

EDIT: You can barely see the larger sun spot, if you zoom in, it's the black dot that's just in the little cusp of darker sun in the middle of that second to last photo. It's in the others as well, but harder to see.

Heh, vehicle-wise, my neighborhood is full of surprises. My next target (tomorrow maybe) is a very cool beat up and rusty truck *drool*, and I know you love those as much as I do.

Btw, I edited a softer version of "Tuning an old Lady".
Take it a bit easier on the editing. :)

Also, came by to leave this here:

And point out this one from the bunch

I believe I like the "softer" version better, hard to resist editing the text out . . . =)

I almost bought a used D5000 this weekend, changed my mind, thinking about the D7000. The D5000 would take my old lenses but I'm not sure the D90 or D7000 will.

Looking forward to the truck

They will. They even will take older AF lenses w/o AF motor in them, as it has so-called "screwdriver" that gets them running. I would go for D7000.

EDIT: Thank you

Thanks, good to know. I was going by this compatibility list which indicates the D90 / D7000 won't work with my old Pre-AI lenses.

Edit: List at the middle (DSLR'S) of the page.

Er...you have pre-AI lenses?
Which ones do you have/do you know they can be converted?

EDIT: That's one of reasons I prefer Canon. If it mounts, even using adapter, it works. Shame they changed bayonet in past, and lens to sensor distance at the same time so you can't attach FD lenses to EOS bodies and have infinity focus....

I do, 24 mm, 50 mm, 105 mm and a . . . 200 mm I think, might be a 135 mm, I will have to look.

Yes I know they can but I prefer to keep them as they are. The 105 mm is especially sharp and I just like the idea of having them just the way they are. Still in the original plastic cup container with Styrofoam bottom just as I always kept them.

I used to do a lot of 4 x 5 and feel comfortable using a hand meter. The D5000 I was looking at was used, like new and just over $400 which was a decent price I thought. The D5100 replaced it but seems to be having lots of problems hence my interest in the D5000 that would also take my old lenses. I am considering the D90 and D7000 but can't convince myself to spend the money. My old F2 and FM are beyond obsolete so . . . I need to get a new DSLR. If not for the lenses I would consider several brands but for now I am looking at Nikon in order to continue using my Nikkors.
