As a PC gamer, I never really used joysticks that much. However, I did use this thing in the Amiga 500 days:

http://www.syntaxerror.nu/joy003.jpg

It just worked and was solid enough to withstand the brutal force of a newbie kid using full muscle strength.

Today, I have an Xbox controller. For whatever reason, this has become the standard.

The Amiga joystick had a satisfying 'tick' whenever it hit an extreme position, giving instant feedback. As I remember it, I always had a feel for either of the 8 directions. On the other hand, I have never gotten used to the Xbox controller's thumbsticks. Since it tries to emulate mouse look in shooters, it can register how far it is pushed in either direction and can be pushed pretty far. As a result, it feels wobbly as hell. There's not the same feeling of instant feedback. And I have never gotten into its spatial design. I'm still unable to get a feel for the basic 8 directions with this thing.

The good thing is that its wireless connection screws up on a regular basis, saving me from having to deal with this monstrosity!!!

Which XBox controller are you talking about, if I may ask? The original system's controller, the 360 controller, or the XBOne controller?

And imho there have been(and will be, no doubt) much worse controllers out there. Take the Wii(original Wii) remote and nunchuk, for example. Whoever thought it would be good to make that thing got a good laugh, amirite? Then there's the nintendo 64's TOTALLY ergonomic controller design.

I use a regular Xbox controller on a few games, not had any real issues with it - note I use a wired one, never foun any wireless hardware that is any good. The controller is recognised (not found a game yet it isn't) and response is ok, though one of the twiddle sticks is going. The other big controller is logitech, had one before and they are very good, but not always recognised - maybe that's fixed in more modern ones. You could do a lot worse, you could DRM your hardware and go with steam one.
For me it depends on the game. Games like Saints Row; Red Dead Redemtion; Elder Scrolls or any FPS I utterly despise to use an controller with. Mouse & Keyboard or bust. Stuff like Soul Calibur or Streetfighter; traditional console game types mostly; are controller only for me. They feel just wrong playing on PC.

Am with you there. I would add personally I like best the ability to use both at the same time. GTA for instance, controller is great for running/driving about, but for shooting always mouse so I end up using controller+mouse. Keyboard is ok, but for that type of control, I just find the controller nicer than keyboard.
I just shifted from Xbox one controller to keyboard. Pure bliss! However, I'm playing Robotron, so it is 8 directions, which isn't the Xbox controllers strongest point since it aims at modern games.

Still, my keyboard can't handle too many keys being held down at once -- but I can hack it somewhat by using special keys (Shift, Ctrl, Alt) which are more compatible with multiple key presses.
The xbox controller is utter shit. For example, I'm now writing an essay. Picking letters off an onscreen character table with a joystick is such a pain in the ass.

controllers are just not very good
fixed
As an all-purpose tool, for me the PlayStation controller design is best. Perfect ergonomics that offer comfortable grip control, good analog sticks and a very decent digipad. For Shoot'Em Ups I prefer an arcade stick/board with microswitches though. First Person Shooters and CRPGS to me feel wrong if not played with mouse & keyboard.
Joysticks were best when they were digital and not analogue, like they are today. Competition Pro forever!

Still play Robotron on the original Xbox, I use the D-pad for moving & the stick for shooting. I know its not the best, but it does help with the movement side of things, now if I could only get the stick to play nice.

Anyway, I'm so glad that some people are still playing that game, so many 10p's were spent on that game when I was young :).

As someone currently using an imitation Gamecube controller replica and has used the Logitech F310, a Steelseries, and is currently eyeing the 8bitdo FC30 pro, I'm going to agree that the XBOX layout does suck, but the Gamecube controller is no walk in the park for most games thanks to that asinine button layout and missing features.
Long time die hard "controller free" PC gamer here (though before GoG I had been a console gamer for several years).

I actually JUST recently started using an XBox 360 controller for some PC games (generally "console" type stuff that I feel like I'd enjoy more with a controller). I've been liking it. It can be rather annoying when games don't alter their ingame prompts to match the controller (I'm sorry Saints Row 2 - you SUCKED - I hope I don't regret my long ago purchase of SR 3 that I still haven't fired up).

But playing Dex with a controller was fantastic. And I'm playing Arcania now and it's a lot of fun. I'll obviously stick with Mouse and Keyboard for FPS games and most other stuff, but for "console style" games, 3rd person games, "arcade" games and the like I've actually enjoyed the 360 controller.
I'm currently playing some gamges with 360 controller like Darksiders and hotline miami. Perhaps with key plus mouse you can have a better performance but I like feel the controller experience. Idk.. Darksiders feels like (a bit) like OoT, legacy of kain and many late 90's games (even panzer dragoon) and the controller adds some nostalgia. I don't know what is my alibi for hotline miami. Perhaps the fact that the 1st too GTA games doesn't use the mouse at all and I like remember that feeling.

I like XB360 controller over many others because you can put your thumb vertically like the N64 analog stick.

Sorry for my offtopic!

I find my 360 controller to be fine. Don't play FPS though, so YMMV.
