I have a 3 year old steam account, a raptr, an origin, a humble bundle, and there are probably more that are slipping my mind. Now all I have to say about GOG is that I can see them surpassing them all just because of the community voting feature. The community will always be happy because they directly take the most upvoted additions and add them. This makes the community a major part of the expansion of this site. Steam just adds what gives them money and EA just buys popular titles. GOG was made for the community so as long as scumbags don't find this site then GOG will be epic.

Sorry to disappoint you, but it doesn't work this way. The community wishlist may help GOG gauge interest in a given title and may be used as one of arguments during negotiations with right holders, but it doesn't dictate order in which GOG releases games.
I personally like the DRM-Free portion. :)

But overall, while they aren't perfect, I think GOG is striving to keep a good balance between "moving forward" in a sense and maintaining their integrity, plus other good items that sets it apart. But, of course, there are things that can be improved, corrected or done for the better.
This same feature unfortunately leads to great but unknown games getting snubbed by the site because they are "too niche" to be sold here if they are unable to get enough votes.

*cough* UrW *cough*

Otherwise, yeah, not too bad really.

While it's great that you're happy with GOG, I'm afraid it isn't all as rose-tinted as you make it seem. Yes, GOG is great, especially compared to many other services, but...

For one thing, they don't "directly take the most upvoted additions and add them". This isn't because they don't want to, but it's more complicated than that. They can't sell a game without having a license from whoever owns the rights to said game, and some publishers just aren't interested in GOG, probably because of its DRM free nature. Other publishers may be interested, but it can take years to negotiate a deal with them. So it's not quite as easy as "adding whatever gets upvoted the most". The community wishlist is still an important tool for GOG, and helps them to know which games are likely to be received well here.

As for scumbags not finding this site, I'm afraid that's too late. Much too late. It's a sad fact of the internet that scumbags are everywhere, and GOG is no exception. It's still the best community I've seen anywhere online, but scumbag-free it is not.

Well, i'm afraid u'll be disappointed cos this forum has already been infested with all sorts of scammers & trollers. Although it hasn't reach rotting lvl but it can get pretty bad sometimes in certain threads. Then again, i gues that's part & parcel of any online community so in that sense i also do think GOG is better than some if not most other communities out there.

So glad this isn't another snarky thread. But yeah while gog isn't perfect, it's my preferred service.

I think Steam perfectly exemplifies what happens when it really is just a matter of voting for a game in order to automatically have it released there, just look at Greenlight. The amount of crappy shovelware made by complete amateurs is appaling.

Ok you're right. Steam is probably the best. I still like GOG though. I see great possibilities.

-I love this place!

-No you don't and I'll tell you why in excruciating detail.

It also goes to show that no matter how much of an obvious cash grab, how utterly without merit a game is, there WILL be at least a few dozen people who'll gladly buy it (and worse, think it's good, and promote it to others!).

There, fixed.

Even though GOG will try to please their costumers, they ultimately must bow to the big forcefield that is (archaic) distributors and laws. In most places they should have stood their ground but they try to compromise.

But I agree - Valve is big and doesn't really care about quality anymore...

EDIT: The last one applies especially to EA as well.
