A closer look at the upcoming galactic playground

As we're drawing closer and closer to reaching No Man's Sky, we are being treated to more intriguing gameplay chunks that show off some of the most common player activities in this uncommonly vast and detailed universe.
Creator Sean Murray recently took IGN through a procedurally-generated frozen planet, poking at the flora and fauna, opening up new passages, marveling at the enigmatic structures, and even trading with aliens. Before flying back into the infinite space above.

If you've missed any of the past footage shown by the developers, keep watching and get ready to jump on the hype spaceship, then go ahead and preorder the game here:

I'm slowly warming up to this game, but I do remember Spore. I think the devs are trying to keep the hype train in check, but OTOH avoiding all publicity 2-3 months out from launch isn't a good plan. Right now I've advanced to cautiously optimistic, and if things still look good in the first week of June I might consider the preorder.

Kamashii: Can't wait for this game and though I know you don't "have" to be online. Would playing this offline make you miss out on much? Cause it's only 60 bucks for me here, over the 90 I be paying on steam.
avatar
Maighstir: You would not be able to acquire data that online players share (animal races and places they have named), but that's still only a miniscule part of the whole. I would assume, though, that both the GOG and Steam releases have the option of playing on- or offline.
I get I would miss out on all the naming, but it seems the chance of even coming across a world someone has already been to seems so low I doubt it would ever happen even if you put 1000s of hours into the game.

Tarm: GRAV? What's that short for?
avatar
Maighstir: While I have no idea, I can link you to its steam page and web site.

A sidenote though, the Swedish word "grav" means "grave".

EDIT: I can make something up though: gigantic radio-active vagina.
Ha ha that sounds like a punk band name. :D

Thank you. I did a search for "grav" in steam and found nothing with exactly that name so I assumed it was short for something. Sometimes I think steams shop search function is even worse than GOGs forum one...

Edit: I miss the old fun swedish band names. Köttgrottorna comes to mind. :)

Wow, price increased to $73. That's part of the hype?

The game never can be that good. :P

eiii: Wow, price increased to $73. That's part of the hype?
It didn't increase. It's still €60.
Edit: Oh wait, I see that they singled out Switzerland. Nevermind then.

MischiefMaker: The big worry I have is taking my time through the game and when i reach the center of the galaxy the hundred closest stars will already have been named.
That's easy to avoid, never go online and none of the stars will be named. ;)

Grargar: Edit: Oh wait, I see that they singled out Switzerland. Nevermind then.
Oh, I see it too. They singled out Switzerland (amongst a few other countries), increased prices and still bother me with Euros, fun.

Do people in other European non-Euro countries also get Euro prices as the default on GOG?

Cusith: I kind of thought this was a more GOG friendly version of Elite Dangerous given the ability to play offline. Certainly I had been interested in Elite till the multiplayer only nature of it, I don't let games go online.
avatar
Nicole28: Exactly. So far, GOG has sold all games DRM-Free. Which means all single/non-multiplayer portions of a game must be runnable without any internet connection, or it can't be put on here for sale. No Man's Sky should be the same, or else it will be a grand litmus test of this.
"It's not DRM if it's only multiplayer..." the hoop-jumping has already started.

I wonder how long until an always online game is released on gog. I suggest would be defenders just go look at the release of Simshitty or Diablows 3, you'll get plenty of talking points about how it's not DRM when it's always online.

avatar
Nicole28: But that isn't, as there is no magical way to play with other people without connecting to the internet. Until such technology arrives, then it's unfortunate.
You could play multiplayer on consoles well before they had internet connections. A decade ago games regularly came out that allowed people to play without connecting to the internet. This magical technology has existed since before the internet.

I didn't even realize it was magic!

Also, please downboat me again. Best thing about posting here is how salty people get at the truth.

Nilok7: As long as Gog sticks with the no DRM,

Skywalkerpl: In before people are shocked and start burning GOG:

NMS is an always-online game. And yes: It is a form of DRM. Deal with it.
No Man's Sky is NOT an always-online game. It absolutely positively works offline.

Works for me. Maybe GRAV is only available in certain locations right now? I dunno...

I really like the graphics style and the idea. However with the limited time I have the price is just too high to justify buying now. Maybe in a year.

Now how is it with the online features? What benefits do I get if I connect and what do I miss if I want to play offline? Can I mix online and offline and get the benefits of being online (if there are some) at least partly?

Skywalkerpl: ... NMS is an always-online game. And yes: It is a form of DRM. ....
But, but. GOG said they are 100% DRM free. How can they?

The only way they would made it is by avoiding all games that are online-only and don't offer private, dedicated servers. It's a huge market that IMHO they should not skip, and I'm fine with making an exception, as long as it's an exception based on a type of games and not an individual titles/publishers.

Because they're not, NMS will have an offline mode.

From what I remember the makers saying on the other videos , the online part of No Man's Sky only kicks in when you go to a beacon to upload your planetary finds, else most of the time you don't have to have an always online experience as that is why I bought it

So what is the benefit of uploading my planetary finds? What If I don't want to upload them?
