First off, sorry for posting this in the wrong forum, but as Quake: The Offering doesn't seem to have its own support forum yet (that I'VE been able to find, anyway) I'm posting it here.

In-game, the Quake video options menu says I need to set screen resolution from the command line. Right-clicking GL Quake, going to properties and changing what I THOUGHT was the command line only changed GL Quake's name.

So where *is* this command line and how do I set it? Is it just the default Windows "run" command?

But anyways, if you are using Galaxy, hit the more button next to the play button on Quake. Hit the nGlide settings button, and then set the aspect ratio to 4:3 (Quake shouldn't be played in 16:9 tbh) and change the resolution to your native resolution. This should put the game in your resolution.

The Quake forums are here, for future reference.

If you haven't removed or renamed the opengl.32.dll file present in the same directory, then you need to use nglide_config.exe to change the game's resolution, since Quake is outputting to that specified resolution. See here for more information.

If you have removed/renamed the OpenGL32.dll file, then you can use the command line (CMD) on Windows. Navigate to the Quake game directory via CMD, then type the following (without quotes): "glquake.exe -width 1024 -height 768 -bpp 32" and see if it launches. See QuakeCMD.png for an image for what I mean.

Alternatively, you can open the properties of the Launch Quake shortcut (right click>properties), then enter in the following as shown in the Quakeshort.png image.

However, doing the two command arguments as listed above may cause the game to crash on start if you have not updated your GLQuake (it does for me).

Consider checking the above forum link for more info on alternative Quake ports that are much more convenient to use. Also check out the forum on ways to set up the music properly.

Apparently I need a new glasses prescription if I couldn't find that forum. (On that note, I find GOG's site a little hard to navigate, but that's a kvetch for another day.)

Thanks to you both!

Also, MREWhite, is there a technical problem with running Quake in 16:9, or does it just look ugly?

Use the DarkPlaces-engine:

It greatly improves the game imho.

Done that before, too many bells and whistles for me---spent more time setting up graphics options than playing the game. Thanks, though.
Darkplaces makes you jump higher, I just use vanilla and it's just like i'm playing on my Voodoo 1.
And the game is made to be played in 4:3, not 16:9.

Could you explain me - step by step - what should I do to install DarkPlaces into my Quake: The Offering?

Firstly, apologies for the necro.

I have just purchased Quake and cannot get a decent resolution to work. Can this be played in 1920x1080p? Or, can it be played full screen in a lower resolution(without the horrid thick borders)?

I have already tried what barjac suggested but I still have a fat ugly border around the screen. With that thick border the game has a smaller screen size than when I played this in the 90s.

Hi,

Today you can also use Ironwail (a fork of QuakeSpasm).

The Quake forums are gone, for future reference.

Cheers

It's highly recommended to run Quake in a source port, such as IronWail, which supports Quake much better on modern hardware, as well as allows you to play custom content:

* Quaddicted: Custom Quake 1 Levels

* Slipgate Sightseer: Quake 1 Forums

* Slipgate Sightseer: New to Quake? Start Here

* Slipgate Sightseer: Quake Engines & Source Ports: A Beginners Guide

* Slipgate Sightseer: Understanding Your Quake Directory & Installing Custom Content

* Slipgate Sightseer: Quake 1 Maps, Mods, Assets, and Utilities
