Hey guys,

After using the XP desktop I built myself for an untold number of years now, I am finally at the point I think I'll upgrade to something new. I was considering building my own again, but decided I really don't want to deal with that these days, and was then also considering getting a Windows 7 machine, but from what I am seeing and reading, it's probably only a matter of time before Microsoft sneaks in, buggers my rig, and upgrades it to 10 anyways, regardless of what constant precautions and monitoring I do....so, screw it, I'll just go the Win 10 route and be done with it. I haven't really kept up on what's the best equipment for rigs anymore, so I'd appreciate any input from those of you that know, or have been there recently. I certainly am not looking to get the most expensive, full blown ass kickin machine out there by any means, but something decent that will last me for a while, like my old rig has (will still be using it for XP type games of course). Anyway, I'm looking to spend about US$1,500.00 or so, and as reference was looking at something like this. I'm sure there are better deals/rigs then this this out there, so that's why I am asking for your recommendations or experience. Definitely want a desktop for my main gaming, so laptops are out. Thanks all!

Just to clarify: You want a box filled with hardware + Windows 10 =< $1500? No periferals like mouse, keyboard, monitor and printer within that budget?
Win 7 is still an option. Some research will show you how to avoid MS dirty tricks . In that case 4th gen core i5/I7 are a very valid solution ( newer intel CPUs are supposed to force you into the Windows 10 world as well ). If you go for W10, go for the latest generation i5/i7. In that price segment, AMD has no competitive solution to offer. ( on lewer , budget price segments, AMD would be an option )

We'e a few days away from the new Radeon cards. If they match the expectations, they will be very good value for money, and energy efficient as well. Check the Radeon RX 470 , possibly RX 480 whn they are available.

Couple that with a good PSU ( never spare on that ), a good mid-range Mobo ( don't spare, don't overspend on that ), 8 or 16GB of memory in function of your needs, an SSD for your OS and key programs and some solid storage solution, and there you go

A suggestion :

Intel I5 6600K ( or 6600 if no intention to overclock)
Asus Z170 Pro Gaming
16 GB DDR4
PSU 80 certified ( Seasonic, Corsair, modular is a plus )
SSD Samsung EVO 500 GB
HDD WD Black, Red or Purple, 4 TB
A case that suits your needs
Radeon RX 470 or 480 in function of your appetite for GPU power ( adjust the PSU as needed, connectors to check)
Opticzl drive if needed

Thanks...any thoughts, recommends on places to buy from, that puts rigs together, and is reputable to deal with? (Nahh, not looking to overclock)

While I'm hopeful for Team Red and the new R4X0 cards... they promised the world and failed miserably with the Fury line... so, for now, I'd go 10x0 on budget
For what it comes with for the price, I thought this one didn't seem too bad. Don't know much about the manufacturer though. PS is probably crap, but I can always replace that with something better. Anyone have any experiences with Cybertron?

I'm not used to the US Market, but Cybertron sells directly as well.

If you go to the assembler's website (http://www.cybertronpc.com/customkititems~kc~gmpal1080x26br~group~play~cat~gamers.htm), you can customize your components.

The basic PSU is the weak part of the initial proposal . "650 W ultra", doesn't look promising ,Cheap brand, wouldn't team that with a Geforce 1080. But on the assembler's website, they allow you to opt for Antec , thermaltake or Seasonic PSUs. The Antec 900W is certified . Good medium range PSU, not too noisy.

You can also opt for another GFX than the 1080.

I would re-balance the proposed system as follows:

- i5 6600 CPU instead of a i5 6500
- SSD Samsung evo 512GB as first drive
- 3 TB WD HDD as storage drive
- Radeon R9 380 in place of a Geforce 1080
- Antec 900 W PSU

Keeping the cost about the same ( 1505 USD vs 1499 )

nb : imho, it's not worth to ovrinvest in the GFX. This is the component that you are the most likely to upgrade after some years. If you intend to keep a system LT, go for a durable, sustainable base, and then do a mid-life upgrade. By making an alternative choice of GFX, you can shift 400 USD to storage, PSU and CPU, without compromising too much on game performance.

wait a few days until amd's RX480 gets launched. if it's good then buy it, if not get nvidia.
regarding psu: any 450-500w branded, gold-type one will be enough (no multi-gpu, maybe light overclock).
