In case anyone is a fan of the old classic Nethack, there is big news. After a more than 10 year hiatus, the newest version of Nethack, 3.6.0, has been released. While as far as new content, it does not have much new to offer, but it mainly cleaned the system and paved the way for future and hopefully more regular content updates.

I grew up on Nethack - actually first played when it was still Rogue. This is great news! Yay, DevTeam!

My cynical reaction: "Paid version incoming."

My optimistic reaction: "Yay, new version of Nethack!"

Hey, it’s free/open-source software! So even if they start to ask money for the binaries, you will still be able to build them yourself from the freely available source code ;)

WOW! An old aquaintance. I never got through it (I suspect that is true for a lot of people) but will try it out again when I have time.

Here is an interesting fact about the game: If it is possible for something to damage you, especially if that something is something unusual, it probably has a unique death message if you get killed.

Remember, even if something does only 1 damage to you, it is possible to be killed by it and possibly get a rare or unique death message.

It is also possible to die when you start. Behold!

My bro semi-persuaded me to have a go at Nethack, but I'll find it cool and cheeky even at distance.

Firstly, he freely admitted he took any opportunity to cheat the system, including training the cat to steal - and trying to magically burrow away from the shop to another level after shoplifting in person (but not very successfully).

What really won me over was his admission that in desperation he ate his cat one, or twice - short-sighted tactic it seems, because it earned curse from gods,

But if food management is part of the gameplay, eating your cat should be an option. On hearsay I loved both nethack and my bro as gamer better for it!
