Belgian prices are quite high. Higher than FR or DE, so I'won't even think in terms of comparison with Malta... Specialized labour here will cost the customer 60-80€ per hour ( that's mainly due to social taxes being so high : for an employer to pay a wage of 1200€ a month to someone, he has to pay another 2400 of charges and taxes, the price of "solidarity" I'd say ) . So the 230€ price was probably time + component + 50% margin on the component + VAT , sort of.

Anyway, if it's cracked, you will have to replace it. Not only is a cracking screen annoying , but depending on the exact issue, it might not be that good for your health ( damaging you vision for instance )

Speaking of health, two things to care for

1) before you do anything, unplug the laptop and remove the battery. Electricty can kill.
2) be careful when manipulating the damaged screen, to avoid any spill of chemicals . While the risk is low ( the screen is built so that this is a very uncommon occurence) and the amtter has a very high viscosity, you don't want to touch this if it happens. And if you touch it, you don't want't to have it in contact with your eyes or ingest it.
