Through some sort of magic, it's now possible to play Mechwarrior 2 3dfx on Windows 7. I didn't work for me before, as the instruction I had said to use dgvoodoo (which didn't work for me), whereas nglide works perfectly. I have a copy of Mechwarrior 2 3dfx, but you can also "convert" certain Windows versions of Mechwarrior 2 to different 3d accelerated versions (note: Windows XP and 7 really only really with with the 3dfx version... the non-3dfx conversion files are really only useful if you have a retro-pc)

Video comparing different versions of Mechwarrior 2 here, including instruction on how to run it on a modern system: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWzWdwj9NvU
Here's a couple other pages on the conversion (but again, DO NOT USE DGVOODOO, us nglide)

http://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=32366 (note: use the link in the youtube video to get the conversion files, as it's mentioned there's some sort of problem with the ones on the vogons website).

Saying all that, I HAVE a retro PC wheras I'm trying to conver the 3dfx version to the PowerVR version, but it isn;'t working.... Not sure if it's an issue with the driver, or an issue with imaging the machine. PowerVR supposed to be the best looking version, too. Too bad the PowerVR wrapper out there doesn't support MW2 :( If you're curious, here's a webpage on the supported games for the wrapper: http://leileilol.mancubus.net/powervr/

Whoa, fuck me. Is this the answer to my prayers? I've been saving the disc for YEARS just for something like this to pop up. Hopefully this isn't insanely complicated to get working.....

Shit. I might have to pick up a stick now.
You can be up in running within 20 minutes. I had it a little easier since I didn't have to put in the 3dfx conversion files (having an original 3dfx disk). Main problems are: Mechlab can think you're over the weight limit when customizing a mech (though I think there's supposed to be a patch for this), and the music didn't loop for me on SIlent Thunder (hadn't played the other missions). Frame-rate was great.

Oh, and keep in mind that MechVM is also a launcher to easily play any games you install. You can use it for some of the other Mechwarrior 2 variants as well.

Also, here's a thread on how to play Mechwarrior 3 on Windows 7, though it sounds like there's still some issues. http://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=42507 I can't comment as I haven't tried it myself yet.
I don't think mine is the 3DFX version....maybe the original release? The one with "Pentium Edition" on the front.

According to here: http://mwomercs.com/forums/topic/73563-mechwarrior-2-in-3dfx-working-in-windows-7-64-bit/ you should be able to drop in the conversion files to make the Pentium edition the 3dfx edition. Just follow the instructions under the video.

Cool, cool. Thanks, man! And I mean that. Been waiting a looooooooong damn time to play this again. One of the all-time greats of PC gaming.
How I wish GOG could get the Mechwarrior series! There are so many great mech games out there!
