BreOl72: Ace of Aces was a good game - but it was also WW 2.

:)
DOH!

Well, my mind/experiences are very much still in the 8-bit era before going to MS-DOS and then windows 95 (with like 2 exceptions for windows 3.11).

I recall Ace of Aces being decent, although i couldn't read and had to figure things out via brute force. Much like Questron and Castle Wolfenstein.

Funny the games and experiences that you remember from when you were young....
Thanks to this thread, I:m sitting here watching (well listening at least) to Snoopy vs the Red Baron:

Whoever they got for Charlie Brown is a bit off.....
Well for the record it was not Wings of War. Checking the large Demo you can try the graphics are not bad at all. It is fun to play, but the one I sought had modern graphics were closer to MSFligh Sim in detail and your targets matching the detail of the plain, nice polished 3d . But Wings of War in terms of missions had exactly the type of gameplay in the one Im lookiing for, dogfights, destroy tank columns, trash AA sites, bomb towns, increase your ranking etc, bonus missions and maybe some items the demo didnt mention.

Will continue to soldier one.

Peace
Yeah, like others have said, you're likely thinking of 'Wings!' (not Wings of War). There's two versions available here, I have the remastered one. It cycles through dogfights, strafing and bombing missions, with briefings in between. After every couple of successful missions you get promoted in rank. Pretty fun game!
If you put WarBird in the list, you also need to put on it Air Warrior series. Both games have WWI and WWII aircraft, but also both were mainly subscription based on-line games, with the difrerence that Air Warrior II and Air Warrior III have and Box edition with off-line missions and campaigns. In WarBirds only free flight and instant action are offline.

Evasive Action has WW1 aircraft among other things, this game was pretty fun.
