Hello,

i am looking for 3D RPGs with free movent, that focus somewhat on dungeon crawling. Some games that i have played that go in the direction i am looking for:

- Might and Magic 6, 7 and 8 (though 8 was bad... lets not even talk about 9 ;))
- Wizardy 8
- Dungeon Lords
- Wizards and Warriors

Something with a complex loot and class system is prefered. Party based or not does not really matter, neither does the combat system. It it's realtime i prefer a pausable system.
I played Grimrock and Might and Magic 10 (and several of the real old school dungeon crawlers) but i am looking for true free movement.
Ultima Underworld I & II.
The Bards Tale IV
Oh wait...
Dungeon Siege?

I guess it really isn't free movement.

The Elder Scrolls: Arena, perhaps? It goes more into the direction of an action-RPG, but it resembles classic CRPGs more than any of its sequels.

Realms of Arkania 3- Shadows over Riva also features free 3D movement, although it's broken up by isometric, turn-based combat.

And I think Dungeon Hack and Menzoberranzan from the Forgotten Realms Archives Collection 3 go into that direction.

Arx Fatalis pretty much fits the bill :)
How could i have forgotten Shadows over Riva... yes, that goes in the direction i am looking for.

Dungeon Siege is an ARPG, not what i am really looking for currently.

How well have Ultima Underworld I and II aged? Graphics are not the main issue for me considering old games, but the overall "usability" is very important in my opinion.

Reviews here show two issues with TES: Arena: poor performance and that it seems to be more an adventure than a rpg.

They're a bit clumsy but II is much improved.

The UU games do work pretty well. Their controls are relatively close to the "WASD" setup we have today. There are some things that require a bit getting used to and especially the mouse input is a bit finnicky at times, but it's not too bad. A lot of the problems with the controls seem to be mitigated by the fact that combat goes comparatively slow in these games. They also carry a lot of the positives from the main Ultima series, largely putting things like exploration, dialogue and interaction with your environment over combat.
Just like with the rest of the series, keeping the manual and reference cards at hand will help greatly.

The performance issues with Arena stem from GOG's DOSbox cofiguration. They decided to run it at 20000 cycles, while the game really works best with either much higher fixed cycles or even the maximum setting.
And I really wouldn't call it an adventure. It is very much a dungeon crawler set in a huge open world.

I know it has been recommended already, but I'll recommend Arx Fatalis.
Here are some more suggestions although some of these will not fit all your criteria, leaning more towards another genre than strict RPG:

Battlespire
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic
Deathtrap Dungeon
Die by the Sword
Enclave
Lands of Lore 2 & 3
Paper Sorcerer

Rune
Severance - Blade of Darkness
Thief Series
Enclave
Rune Classic
Arx Fatalis
Battlespire

Those are all pretty good crawlers with free movement. I assume you mean free versus grid-based movement.
If you are in the mood for a broken and buggy game there's Descent to Undermountain.
