I just updated the device for a relative of mine and catapulted her into the 20th century. The whole situation went literally downhill after discovering that one of her artistic needs could not be served anymore on this new device. One of her hobbies is the creation of graphical stuff and for this she uses a whole range of novice sort of programs. For example the work starts in powerpoint 2003, continues in powerpoint 2013 to finish in a program she names microsoft photo premium 10 and it is this program that either needs a modern day replacement or i will have to reinstate the old machine.

Apparently one of the features of this program is the ability to cut out a piece of the image, change its color, sharpen it in a very easy way, photoshop is deemed to complex to handle so I was hoping to find some recommendations for other modern day programs if possible

The installation of the older program did fail since it depends on a working internet explorer 6 for its workings ( now i did think it weird that the program worked on her older machine since that one run windows 10 too but oke ... )

If photoshop is too complex then GIMP certainly would be as well.

Edit: that said, its probably the best all round option.

Never heard of anyone using those for artwork?? Anyways, on top of Gimp and paint.net, there are loads of tools out there depending on what you want to do. Krita is another free tool for example.

Well, after carefully suggesting to take a look at Gimp, mainly because i heard other users talk about this program too, we went on this small crusade towards the gimp site. I pulled my big silver shield and moved forwards as first while listening to the commentary in the background.
No gimp does not exist ....... oh look...... oh nice images on the main site ........ this is for painters ......... no this only in English....... Me - we could try it out ? ... no no no , i know what i need.... types something on the keyboard ..... first results on the side of the page, youtube tutorial how to make an image transparent in gimp... in dutch ..... clicks the video ... watches the video ... no, i don't think gimp will work

I left her there, i'm sure somewhere next week i will find out that Gimp is installed

Krita is the best.

I found Gimp to be a bit more complicated than PhotoShop but this was coming from already being familiar with PhotoShop while Gimp was the new thing.

The biggest downside to PhotoShop that would have me advise against obtaining it is not its complexity, but the change of pricing model. My old copy of PhotoShop 7 was priced where you bought it once then owned it to keep using as long as you have a computer that can run it. Adobe has since changed to a monthly subscription model for PhotoShop.

If she doesn't like Gimp, there's several other free alternatives:

It's what I use. Not quite as fully featured as some others, but pretty easy to use. See attachment.

No new programmes to suggest but a reminder that both GIMP and PhotoShop have a plethora of extra tools you can download and add. Some cost money.

I've heard of Krita being very good. There's also LazPaint, simpler and smaller.

MTpaint, Pinta, Krita, GrafX2, Kolourpaint. Those are the ones I've used primarily.

I've tried to look at screenshots of ms (picture it!) photo premium 10, and I'm not sure you need a "regular" graphical program, perhaps you should look for a photo editor instead.

I also second paint.net if you just want a graphics editor to cut and repaint ready pictures as well as make them transparent. It's free, small, only a bit more complex than the program Paint provided by Microsoft as the default pictures editor on Windows 7 while way more powerful than the latter. Oh, and it supports Nederlands, click on the attached image to take a look.

hmm yea, this would work too ... even i can work with this ;)
