Hello,

I seem to remember a game, a bit arcadish but a lot of fun. It was kind of isometric third person flying a Jet Craft over earth terrain and firing at objects that hovered over a landscape for points and energy. I cant remember to well but I do remember flying over palm trees in a dessert area but may have been other terrain.l but I played it on my creative 3d blaster, at the time, the most trustworthy graphic boards you could get for the era. And it was pretty good for the time.

Thanks.

The first game I thought is Desert Strike:

Hey Hey,

I'm one of those god old day people, who misses the fun had with sprite based games and would have no problem if 3d as a game platform never happened.

I'm wondering what ever became of the following developers from the pre EA/Steam onslaught. All brilliant game developers and now I have not seen anything from them since the late 90s. Have they given up and working some other software angle? When they leave the scene it always to me that they never return to wow us with something they have been nurturing since they last published a game. Any ideas why they seemed to have turned their backs on developing their own games and working behind the scenes I guess but I never see any current games linked to them.

In fact so many out here get the feeling the even Sid Meier, does not take a hands on approach to Firaxis game releases the way he use to, as though his baby, now grown up, needs less of his attention and he is more of a figurehead. I could be wrong but if feels like that . I always see others interview for the latest crops of Civ games not Sid.

What happened to Will (Maxis) Wright, Peter (Bullfrog Games) Molyneaux, John (Doom Software Stud and the guy who was gonna make you his bitch) Romero, Bill(I-Magic) Steely, Brian ( Age of Empires 3, Rise of Nations)Reynolds.

Cheers.

Not a 3D game.
Is it Raptor: Call of The Shadows?
It sounds a little bit like Fire Fight from 1996 by Chaos Works, Epic MegaGames and EA. It was a Windows 95
only game.

Nuclear Strike is 3D with 3dfx graphics, but it's a helicopter, not a jet: https://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/nuclear-strike/screenshots
Fits the era at least.

Almost, it played just like this only with the generic jet fighter and different earth terrain and things like fuel and missles hovered in the air, and it had also the same maneuverability as firefight.

I hope it's not too late (almost 10 months...) to necro a thread, but I was a HUGE fan of space war games of the mid 90s and early 2000s. (they don't make 'em like that anymore... wish they did!)

The two big ones I can remember (aside from Fire Fight, ICONIC game btw) are Swarm (Reflexive Arcade) and 3D Missile Madness.

I believe Swarm is available on GOG, actually. 3D Missile Madness was one of those "generic" knockoff games sold as part of the Cosmi collection CDs (you know, "the password is the 3rd word in the 4th line of the program description")

The gameplay of Swarm and the design of the fighter is similar to Fire Fight, and you do find shields and weapons hovering around to pick up. However, I wouldn't say it's set in a desert terrain; 3D Missile Madness seems to satisfy that requirement. Though I don't recall that having items floating around for pickup.

The other game I fondly remember playing was a DOS game with graphics that rivaled its Windows counterparts, called Stargunner by Apogee Software. Unfortunately, this one definitely doesn't have any desert terrain that I can remember.

Hope this helps. If not, at least you'll have a good three more recommendations to play (and they are definitely worth playing, especially Stargunner with its unique ship upgrade mechanism)!
