Hey all,

I need some advice. My desktop has had to be packed away because of space issues at home and I'm currently without any hardware to play classic PC games on!

I've been looking at cheap laptops and chrome books and these nvidea tablet things as a portable solution with a smaller footprint.

Obviously I can't play Windows games on a android tablet or chrome book but I have heard that I could run games virtually from my old PC and since it is stored in a closet next to the router and a power supply I should at least be able to set it up to turn on and connect to the network.

My budget for new hardware is pretty small I don't want to spend more than £250. At this level I've heard the Windows laptops are not really fit for purpose. However the nvidea tablets and chrome books have had some good reviews under this budget.

As for gaming I mostly play old school RPGs like Baldurs. Strategy from paradox and the odd Indy game I like the look of. Having said that I was half way through witcher 3 when I packed the PC away!

Does anybody have any advice or experience they'd care to share of cheap laptops for old/ relatively low spec games or running things virtually?

Thanks in advance!!

At the £250 price point you will want an AMD based laptop.

In terms of gaming a £250 AMD laptop will give at least four times the performance than that of an intel based laptop.

I got a AMD based laptop from our local Co-op last year for £200 for my son. That would play almost all my GoG and Steam libraries.

It would however not play something like Witcher 3, not at playable frame rate.

Running things in a virtual machine can be troublesome on cheap laptops, because for some daft reason they disable virtual extensions of the CPU and remove the enable options from the bios.
