Cadaver747: He was extremely popular in USSR, I believe back in the day his most famous movie was Le professionnel (1981). Good actor, I loved to watch movies with him, it's time to check his latest works, I saw good reviews about movie Un homme et son chien (2008). Rest in peace.
A lot of his movies also made it to East German TV (not sure about cinemas). I remember L’Alpagueur and also Le professionnel.

I watched several movies with him, I remember fondly Cartouche (1961), Le magnifique (1973), L'animal (1977), Flic ou voyou (1979) and Le guignolo (1980) which was translated like "A four-handed job". Several movies were shown at local cinemas and then later on TV, unfortunately local censorship was eager to cut movies to fit viewer's *contemplation*, sexual scenes were practically non existent, some names or meanings were changed as well. I think I just re-watch them all in order of publication in French (with subtitles).
RIP
I had no idea Belmondo was known outside french-speaking countries, especially in Eastern Europe and Russia...

He was very well known in Portugal. During the 70's and 80's a lot of french films passed on national television along with english, italian and american ones.
Anime fans may recognize him as the inspiration for Space Adventure Cobra.
