So today I asked google if it's possible to play Warcraft 2 in LAN.
First result which came was Warcraft 2 Combat Edition.
They claim that they are small multiplayer WC2 community banded together from Zone, Kali, Battle.net & elsewhere! and The Last Warcraft II Server in the World.
I downloaded it and singleplayer ran fine.
Which brings me to another question, is Warcraft 2 Combat Edition legit?

No, it's not. Blizzard hasn't digitally released it yet.

I've never heard of Combat Edition.

There's the original two Warcraft 2 CDs, called Tides of Darkness and Beyond the Dark Portal. Then there was a rerelease which combined both called Battle.net Edition.

Furthermore, Blizzard still supports Warcraft 2 BNE for online play. They did a Windows 10 compatibility update some weeks ago.

If you really want a legit copy of W2, it's an extremely common game and it should be cheap on sites like eBay. I've found a couple at local thrift stores, so give that a try.

Nope, that will be far more expensive as eBay at my place don't have it and finding it at thrift store is impossible because there wont be any working copies left.

If it contained malware, it's already too late.. O_o

VirtualBox is great. At least if you're still on Windows 7 (Virtual PC is awful, its only slightly redeeming quality is the fact that it comes with a working Windows XP license - XP Mode, also it's only in some editions of the OS), or don't have one of the Windows 8/10 editions that come with Hyper-V, and don't want to cough up some money for VMWare Workstation. You could also run Linux and KVM, which is probably the most powerful solution *, but a tad more annoying to configure.

* Good luck doing this with a Windows base - yes, there's a more extreme version of that, but the former is slightly cheaper and closer to what many people already have.

I haven't noticed any issues with it on Win 10, but I don't really do any "power user" stuff with it, just run a couple of Linux distros for the fun of it.

No. You can install Win 7 using same disc image without any key.
It will work as it will be installed as a trial.
You can use VHDs as well.
