Timboli: OP - Unfortunately not, as it is just the nature of the beast.

Maybe if we all collectively boycotted such a franchise .... but best of luck with that.
As they say, fools and money are easily parted. Many people just have to have and have it now.

That said, all of us are weak at times ... hell, even me ... ha ha ha.

Just yesterday I finally bought realMyst Masterpiece Edition due to a special discount email.
I'd been putting off buying the game even though I had all the others. I wanted it, but had been annoyed when it was released here because I'd not long before bought the standard Real Myst ... no longer available here. It was bad timing and I wanted a bigger discount than they gave. I could have bought the Masterpiece Edition for $7 AUD back then and in hindsight probably should have, especially as I don't recall it ever being below $10 or $11 AUD since (a few years). When they advertised a little while ago about the new version of Myst, I got another of those special discount emails and scored the only other two Myst games I did not have at the time, for a fair price, but the Masterpiece Edition was around $12 or $13 AUD still, so not much of a discount. Anyway with this latest email discount it was $8.49 AUD, and I just decided to cut my losses and finally get it. Cost me $1.50 more than if I had been smarter back in the day, but that's life, and I finally have it now and can close that door. Weak I know, and just my luck they will drop the price again when the new one comes out.

The sad thing and why I did not pay that $7 back in the day, was because the standard Real Myst became redundant and I'd only just bought it. If I'd had it a lot longer, that $7 wouldn't have seemed all that much. Them's the breaks. It of course also felt like I was being conned to pay twice for the game.
yeah i got that offer too , not really my kind of games
try out Quern - Undying Thoughts it is very similar, but seems more logical
imho just make a list what you want to play next and not in the unknown future and only buy those when discounts come , i cant see the point of buying games just to have them on the account

samuraigaiden: All the stuff you listed was garbage from the start. Star Wars had two good (not great, just good) movies and everything else is trash. Star Trek was never good, at it's best it was entertaining. Marvel and DC movies and TV shows are all garbage.

darthspudius: Star Trek was never good? Reeeally? Wish someone told me 30 yrs ago to let me know before I started loving it.

Modern civilisation has gone soft. They've turned into gender pronoun wimps. Television has to adapt to these fools if they're going to succeed at something. These new shows and movies aren't aimed at fans. They're aimed at the people who normally wouldn't have the intelligence to understand old school Star Trek, as an example.
I didnt get why it was never good and same for star wars ... wonder what kind of movies/series he likes

ST is pretty good at least most of the series and some games.

Robette: I still don't get the whole Star Wars upset. I watched the movies (except the last one of the new trilogy) and played various games, but never was a particular fan of the franchise.

I vividly remember when the prequel trilogy came out, just how bad it was. The prequel movies were legitimate 6/10 movies, with the third being slightly better than the rest. I'm ok with people disliking the new trilogy, but I still struggle to wrap my head around how people can go about pretending the prequels were not disappointing movies.
Probably because you are not a fan of the old ones and just said meh.
The prequels were not good ,but they are still better than the new movies, that speaks a lot how shitty the new ones are.
Their stories are garbage , characters are just badly thought out, even the pacing is bad. And whats the worse they go against the previous canon, like with that Holdo maneuver warping the ship into the huge ship ... what a total bs.

I think it's universaly accepted that the prequels were laughably bad. In fact by calling them "6/10 movies" you're giving them way more credit than I and probably most Star Wars fans ever would. At least older fans. I guess people who grew up with the prequels, especially if they had the misfortune of seeing the prequels first, have a lot of nostalgia for them and can be blind to a lot of their faults.
Lol, Star Wars family oriented? Well, it is about family relationships, so I guess you are on something. Then again, something being infantile doesn't means "adults" can't watch it as well.

But I am getting out of topic. Back to the topic: nothing lasts forever! Life ends, and so will the universe one day. With everything eventually ending, it's nihilistic to believe that franchises can go on forever. I don't know why nerds (or at least nerd culture) have so many problems with this.

Instead of crying about franchises who's lifetime has long since expired "ruining" themselves, it seems much more productive to explore different franchises or works and thus expands one's field of interest. Or rewatch/replay/reread the old franchise while it was "good".

Or the new SW fans had that fortune to watch them without prejudice and whining of the older SW fans affecting them, and thus get to enjoy more SW movies.

"prejudice" doesn't enter into it. The prequels are awful, awful movies. Not just in the context of the original trilogy, but even just simply on their own. The story is full of holes, the dialogue is often very bad, the acting is (with few exceptions like Ewan McGregor) mostly terrible, the overused CG sucks.

The saving grace of the prequels is that, unlike the sequels, they managed to, amonst all that mess, introduce interesting characters, places and ideas into the SW universe that thrived in other media, like the Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars cartoon or Republic Commando.

Orkhepaj: snip
There have been some great returns too. For instance, I loved cobra kai. Dark was amazing as well and its third season was pretty darn good.

This also holds true for Ash vs Evil Dead.

It depends on who the showrunner is. As a content creator, I realize that living up to a great first act is not easy to do.

The star wars new trilogy lacked a cohesive vision or an overarching storyline and the third movie was just a fan appeasement retcon. As far as I am concerned, the new canon never happened.

As long as movies are made to tell an engaging enough story, they will work. However, if filmmakers try to shove propaganda down our throats then those films will fail miserably, more often than not.

This holds true for the new terminator, ghostbusters, or even star wars. Captain Marvel was the only exception to that rule.

So you say. I stopped believing in good and bad recently, and I stopped being a SW fan long time ago. Watching the Original Trilogy now without any nostalgia, I don't find them to be particularly good movies at all, especially the New Hope. They share the same weakness which you attributed to the Prequels, only perhaps in lesser amount. So yeah, the Prequels may be "awful", but the Originals aren't much better. It's all style over substance.
Nothing lasts forever, everything is temporary.
One day it is here and the next its dust.
I think large part of franchise ruin lies in rose tinted glasses, big expectations and fans as well as creators.
I'm actually a fan of the new Discovery series. I like quite a few of the characters in it.

Sadly Picard felt too 'Mass effect' ripoff to really enjoy, including an equally disappointing ending. It seemed a bit too slow overall, though it had some nice moments. (PS: I don't mind slow)

Already have it, and some others.

I actually buy my games with the intent to play, though fully accept I may never get to some before I leave this life ... that's okay because for me richness comes from variety and freedom of choice at any one time ... a form of control over an aspect of your life, where you usually don't have a great lot ... though we are great at lying to ourselves about that.

As you can see, I am not an impulse buyer and often wait for the right price, even years as in this case.

Star Wars has 2 good movies. A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back. Good, not great. Coincidentally, the only two pieces of content that got made under the Star Wars name before it went from being a Sci-Fi movie with sequels to a multimedia product line. The Return of the Jedi is already tarnished by the 'everything is marketing' mentality. Entire sequences in that movie were only included to sell toys, build up spin off TV shows and other crap.

Star Trek is a superior product in quality because it existed for a very long time in it's pure form, as a TV series adaptation of the classic Sci-Fi genre fiction literature. It established it's identity before becoming popular and as such it preserved some slight resemblance of dignity. Still, it's at best guilty pleasure Sci-Fi.

Super hero movies are all shit. I'm glad nobody took issue with that.

Early super hero movies were great, most notably the first Superman movie with Christopher Reeve.

Although people mock the 1980 Flash Gordon movie, that one was at least funny.

I agree with that, these are the most boring reskinned movies

Yeah original SW3 was not that good , it clearly lacked something the other 2 had, and they added ewoks...
