I recently found about this game, after the announcement of Expeditions Rome, so I think in give it a try to the series atarting with the first game. For what I read the sequel is more like a mix of role playing game and TBS, is the first one like this? I would like to hear some opinions of other users that play before make a purchase! Thanks in advance, people :)
I really liked the game, but I am probably biased since turn based tactical games are my favorite genre. The game does have RPG elements and choices to make combined with the tactical battles. It also has a light strategic layer when on the overworld map- where to go and how long to take and how to set up your camps etc. The game only had one downside that some may not like- it has a very large starting area to teach the game. Unfortunately the main part of the game introduces very little after that, so if you don't like the game play of the starting area at all- there's nothing that will rescue the game for you after that. But I liked it.
yes
Conquistador is more open-ended compared to Viking. You are free to explore virtually anywhere in the overworld. Camping is more meaningful in Conquistador. Different types of terrain determine difficulty of certain camping tasks. Supplies are relatively scarce and there are serious consequences if cannot maintain the health and morale of your party. You can camp anywhere outside the radius of a settlement. For reasons I don't understand, Viking restricts camping to set locations.

Character growth is more restrictive. Your character is a leader who doesn't actively participate in combat and the only camping duty is healing, which isn't always needed. Your base stats augmented by your crew composition, but otherwise never change. Your expedition crew are tied down by their class, getting slightly better stats, a new ability and perks when ranked up. Instead of equipping individual pieces of you allocate certain number of resources (simply called equipment) to access higher-tiered weapons and armor. The positive thing about the limited character growth is combat is that devs were able to make the combat more balanced, having fewer variables to worry about.

It's good.
It has issues - some I noticed when playing and still remember:

1) Enemies level up in sync with my own units. So its questionable if leveling up is even beneficial.

2) My (attempted) playthrough got ended by a bug which killed some of my crew.

3) The gameplay in the wild (outside of scripted locations) is simple and repetitive.

If you play easy difficulty and/or cheat the first two may be irrelevant to you.

Thanks for your replies, people!!!! For your comments the game sounds incredible amazing, but unfortunately I have a familiar urgency and have to travel, I will leave it in my wishlist for now for the end of the sale or for another offer :)
Still, after this it is a guaranteed purchase so you can ask THQ for a percentage of the sale XD

Ugh, I absolutely hate that in RPGs. I had it on my wishlist, but might remove now, knowing that.
It's great, I'd definitely recommend it if you like turn-based combat. Also pretty solid with choices and consequences, better than many "pure" rpgs. You can play as a humane explorer or a bloodthirsty conqueror, or something between those poles.
Difference from Viking (and presumably Rome) is that Conquistador has greater emphasis on exploring an overland map and ressource management (acquiring enough food and healing supplies for your party etc.). Could maybe compared with some very old-school rpgs like Realms of Arkania in that sense. I liked that aspect of the game a lot, and imo it isn't tedious or annoying, but that "simulation" aspect might be a bit surprising, if you're expecting a standard "modern" rpg.

I'm not a fan of level scaling myself , but I don't think Expeditions Conquistador was that bad. Officer-ranked units are strong, but they won't last that much longer than a recruit if they allow themselves to be exposed by multiple attackers.

It should be noted that there are only 5 ranks your expedition crew can achieve. The highest two ranks are officers, and there is a limit to how many you can have. There is less emphasis on character growth in Conquistador compared to Viking, the latter which is closer to a "traditional" RPG.

For me is actually something I enjoy, most of the time I do secondary missions and activities before the main ones, so I tend to be incredible high level and game lose all the challenge :/
