Steam, online drm in diablo 3 and starcraft and other games is because people feed these games money. Before mass internet penetration of highspeed interent was wide enough, you got the entire game to run on your computer. Game companies have been slowly cutting out game functionality and holding program code hostage on servers at their companies headquarters.

In the past, games like quake 3, unreal tournament, descent, warcraft 2, etc, didn't have any online DRM in them. AKA you could always play the games multiplayer over lan, etc, no need for a connection to play single player, etc.

GOG.COM exists because games have become locked down under marketing bs : F2p,mmo, etc, aren't 'genres' they are forms of drm. See here with player run world of warcraft servers and legal shenanigans:

AKA imagine if id Software tried to use the courts to prevent people from hosting their own private Quake 3 and unreal tournament servers. "MMO's" are a trojan horse to prevent private server RPG's. Via clever verbal gymnastics and taking advantage of the fact most people are computer illiterate.

Technically all games should be going public domain.

What " the reason gog.com exists" has to do with Steam and DRM? gog.com trades games without DRM.

I think his point is that, because every other major gaming platform is DRM'ed up the wazoo, GOG.com is able to do business by filling a market niche that really ought not to exist. While his phrasing is odd, I believe he wasn't trying to criticize GOG, quite the opposite in fact.

Essentially what he is saying is that if the gaming market wasn't completely fucked up in the first place, GOG.com could not have existed, because they would not be offering anything unique compared to their competitors.

And what I'm saying is that if the gameing market was completely fucked up then all people would only buy DRM games promoted by well known companies, no matter how poor their quality would be.
Also when GOG project was just started it offered Good Old Games - and that was it's main feature, DRM-free was just a side effect as it was more pain to insert DRM into old games than it would worth.
And thus the reason GOG exist is that there are people who are interested in quality products no matter what PR tries to tell them. Not the other way around.
For my answer I'd like to quote the bible.

The Book of Nerds - Chapter three, verse one
'And God spoke to the assembled at the comic-con, and he commanded, 'Video games are but a reflection of those who play them. Now go forth and spread thy gospel.'
