Cause there's no business like show-business!

Our DRM-Free approach to digital distribution has been the foundation of GOG.com since day one and we're convinced it is now firmly rooted in the gaming industry landscape. More and more users start to expect and demand the digital content they paid for to be free from any kind of restrictive mechanisms that limit access to their collections and get in the way of enjoyment. We think this is a good time to take the next step in our quest to make digital entertainment better for everyone. Today we set out to spread our DRM-Free ideas across the movie industry! That's right: GOG.com now offers DRM-Free movies.

Our goal is to offer you cinema classics as well as some all-time favorite TV series with no DRM whatsoever, for you to download and keep on your hard drive or stream online whenever you feel like it. We talked to most of the big players in the movie industry and we often got a similar answer: "We love your ideas, but … we do not want to be the first ones. We will gladly follow, but until somebody else does it first, we do not want to take the risk". DRM-Free distribution is not a concept their lawyers would accept without hesitation. We kind of felt that would be the case and that it's gonna take patience and time to do it, to do it, to do it right. That's quite a journey ahead of us, but every gamer knows very well that great adventures start with one small step. So why not start with something that feels very familiar? We offer you a number of gaming and internet culture documentaries - all of them DRM-Free, very reasonably priced, and presenting some fascinating insight into topics close to a gamer's heart. Now, what do we have in store for you?

- There's a whole new Movie Catalog for you to browse!
- All the movies we sell are priced at $5.99 (that's a launch promo price for a few of them), and we aim to have that as the main price point for most of our future releases
- Two of the movies - The Art of Playing and TPB AFK: The Pirate Bay Away From Keyboard are available for FREE, so that you can test our new movie distribution features
- Most of our movies are in Full HD 1080p quality, some in 720p. With those of you with limited bandwidth or download quota in mind, we also supply much lighter 576p versions.
- Apart from downloading your movies you have the option to watch them streaming online, right here on GOG.com
- GOG.com is famous for its bonus goodies - each movie will come with as many of them as we can muster
- You can expect subsequent movie releases each week

That's it. GOG.com Movies is a go, time to get some popcorn!
A quick scan of the news posts suggests that the last film release was http://www.gog.com/news/movie_release_burning_man_beyond_black_rock on 30th Jan. (Did I miss anything?) If we don't get another within the next few days, GOG will have gone a whole month without a release in the Movies section.

Friday is the usual movie release day. You're not missing anything, Burning Man was the last release. I'll hope for something nice this week. :)
Well, out of http://www.gog.com/wishlist/games/nothing and http://www.gog.com/wishlist/movies/nothing_1 we got the one from the gaming wishlist.

Would any bluetext like to comment on the reported demise of the movie section?

Interesting,

Could simply be a case were GOG rejected their movie and they simply meant that. If it it has failed, I find it strange that they have given up so quickly, obviously like when DRM free games started this was going to be a slow process.

It's not looking particularly good for movies, though, as we haven't seen a new one for over a month.

Maybe they can't find any more with worldwide distribution rights in one currency with a partridge in a pear tree. :)
I told them this would happen if they refused to carry the Ernest movies.
U tried.
In the mean time, Motivational Growth appeared on Steam
For more on Steam's transition to hosting films, Devolver Digital's founding partner Mike Wilson offered Eurogamer the following statement:

“We've been talking with Steam for more than two years now about the fact that they eventually wanted to also sell movies and music (as they've publicly disclosed several times now), as they are making their Big Picture/Living Room push. Once you're the box in the living room, you need to offer other entertainment offerings just like the console guys.

"While I can't speak for Valve, I don't think they ever imagined that this would just mean 'games movies' or 'games music' ... but that's what they've focused on during this sort of beta/experimental period in those areas. Devolver believes that gamers like movies and music of all kinds, and that the indie offerings in particular have a chance to see much greater success on Steam than on mainstream platforms, since Steam has such a huge community that actively seeks out, shares, and engages with stuff outside the mainstream (Devolver's rather esoteric games lineup, for example); the Big Hollywood or mainstream music stuff is already available everywhere else, but the existing film platforms are largely abysmal for discovering hidden gems.

"We believe that while movies on Steam will never likely be nearly as big as games, they could still an incredibly important platform for the armies of independent film makers out there that are creating amazing, award-winning content that never really finds a home outside the insular festival circuit. Because if you imagine the world of indie games without Steam... well, that's where the world of indie films has been.”
Since the last posts in this thread, another film was released...

...and then streaming links were silently removed when the new account system went live last month. (Reportedly the actual pages for streaming still exist. There is of course a wishlist entry for bringing streaming back.)

Mixed messages, one might say...
Hmmmm.... five months now since GOG has released a new movie. Can GOG officially announce yet that they're done with them? It's odd when there's 1250 games here but just 55 movies. Doesn't hardly seem justified having that movie tab up top.
At least they tried.

But I'm still disappointed that they didn't release UHF. >.>
Actually there was a film release last month: http://www.gog.com/forum/general/movie_release_journey_quest_journey_quest_city_of_the_dead_b784c

They gotta at least have Ernest Goes to Camp. That one's classic.
