Not sure if mentioned before - Vozvrashchenie (The Return).

It was a bit weird, actually. It's not usually my type of movie, and as you say, it's mostly predictable from the start, but for some reason, everything got to me: the one liners felt funny, the characters were basic but endearing, and all in all it made me want to stick to see the end. Since a feel-good film that actually works as intended is not the norm (at least for me), thought I'd mention it.

Enthiran is an intense and hilarious high action movie from India with awesome special effects, it really blew my mind! Plus, it stars the most beautiful woman in the world - Aishwarya Rai Bachchan nom nom nom.

The movie is almost entirely in Hindi IIRC, however it has English subtitles and they do speak a bit of English here and there. It was fine with the subtitles though. I saw the trailer for this about a year before it was available in North America and it blew me away so I just _had_ to see it. It was amazing!

One thing though, the movie is extremely long, clocking in at 2:54 - which was fine by me but some people have a short attention span so just throwing a warning out there. :) Also, apparently it is culturally common in India to intersperse music videos/performances randomly within feature films like a sort of musical intermission, so the film has 3 or 4 music videos spread throughout it that last a few minutes long. A lot of North American friends found that to break the continuity of the movie, as did I - but I didn't mind watching Aishwarya do a sexy dance to music for a few minutes here and there to be honest. Consider it "culture" and enjoy the f'n movie, it's awesome, totally over the top!

Some good crime films, one from Japan called Sonatine (1993). It was written, directed, edited and stared Takeshi Kitano, the same Takeshi from Takeshi's Castle. Its abut a group of yakuza from Tokyo sent to Okinawa to mediate a peace truce in a gang war that's broken out there. When they arrive though it quickly escalates out of hand and they retreat to a beach house to await their orders from Tokyo. It was a flop in Japan as people couldn't see Kitano as a tough yakuza killer, but Quentin Tarantino was at a French film festival, loved it and brought the video rights to release it in America in 1998. Kitano had it the big time the year before though with this film Hana Bi.

A good Brazilian film is The City of God. A semi true story about drug gangs and their wars in the slums of Rio de Janeiro in the sixties and seventies. Very violent, has a scene where a crying five year old is executed by one of these gangs and many others where children of a similar age who are in the gangs are killed in shootouts.
