Hey, I have a computer from work without admin rights to it. I cannot install games, and am limited to what I can do to the system.

Does games on GOG require admin rights or installation (provided that the required drivers etc. are working as they're supposed)? And would the 30 day money back gurantee cover situations where games are unplayable due to strict IT departments?

Please help me GOG. You're my only hope.
Yes, the games from GOG do require installation. Some might even require admin rights to install and no, the Money Back Guarantee does not cover being unable to install games due to strict IT departments.

On top of that, if your rights on your work machine have been restricted so severely this is a clear sign that you are not allowed to install private software on your work machine. I'm pretty sure that's exactly what your IT department will tell you when you ask them if you are allowed to install games or other private software. If you do so anyway you can get fired for that. So if you value your job buy yourself a private machine to play games on.

It guy here... if your locked down I will guarantee you they do software scans of all company assets and when they see the games (which I'm 100.1% positive will work with a few tricks) you will be in serious trouble.

Correct,we needed ''special'' permission to install a game and then the IT guy would install it.

Games like DOOM or Wolfenstein could be run on a source port without installing it on the work computer but you'd still need to find a way to get the source port and wad files on the computer. There is also a portable DOSBox that you could use to run quite a few of the older games after unpacking the installers. But is it worth getting caught?

Source: I did this on the high school computers.
Why are you going through so much trouble trying to install games on your work PC? Just punch you boss in the nuts, that will achieve the end result (you being unemployed) much faster...

I guess it depends on the company. I've been fine for all those years, installing games on my company's laptops. If the IT guys have scanned it, apparently the company hasn't cared enough. Of course I suggest people shouldn't try their luck...

I've tried to make sure though that I don't install anything that might get the company into (legal or security) trouble, like:

- pirated software (for obvious reasons)

- freeware or shareware where it states it is free for personal use, but one should pay for corporate use (I don't know if using such software on a company laptop is considered personal or corporate use, so just to be on the safe side...)

- of course any software which might be considered a security risk in some way, but then I don't install such software on my personal PCs either.

Earlier it used to be that by default we didn't have admin rights but one had to apply for them (approval from the manager, and grounds why (usually saying you need to install some testlab software was enough)), but later they started granting admin rights to everyone by default, possibly they got so many requests...
Just to add, some of the older games can be copied over or use source ports from a usb stick. I have had Diablo (which isnt on Gog yet) and baldurs gate on one, though my usb is 64gb and super fast. A lot of thing can be portabilised, just look at portableapps.com.

I'm pretty sure quite many GOG games work fine in a portable mode without installation... but you need to install them first on some other PC, in order to get the game files that you can then copy to the new PC, or play from a USB flash stick or whatever.

Even many Steam games are apparently like that.

Oh, but of course if some game needs certain version of Visual C++, DirectX or whatever installed, then naturally you'd need admin rights to install those dependencies... Trial and error, I guess.

Given that playing games at work seems absurd to me, I would absolutely despise a locked down laptop >:(
Wow, I see my topic sparked a lot of discussion. All I wanted was if it was covered by the 30 day back gurantee or not (and I understand that it's not).

Regarding the other speculations, different countries have different laws regarding employment and their dissmissal. And whoever plays games during their work day, should maybe think of a different workplace. Unless of course it is of use to their workplace / organisation.
