Not-so-brief summary: The estimation of them getting the game out before 2019 ended was a bit of a pipe dream. Most of the Campo Santo development team has been working on things like Half-Life: Alyx and Dota Underlords while others have been working on Steam in general. The claim is that In the Valley of Gods isn't canceled outright but "on hold" and that the Campo Santo team "may return to it" and when they do, they'll make sure the fans are made well aware.

Sorry, I'll readily admit that I'm missing the context of what context you say is missing then.

The context of what the game itself is? It is (or was) a first person adventure game made by the same studio who made Firewatch (who became part of Valve in 2018). I mean, that was covered in the beginning post (mostly).

The context of why it's now "on hold"? I thought the summary I had given was fair - the game got put on hold because Valve has co-opted the development team onto other projects. The developers had originally estimated the game to be released "in 2019" back when they originally teased it around 2017 but due to the other work, are now forced to move away from it until they have the time to devote to it again.
Not too many people were excited about this release anyway. Also taking their time with other projects means that they're gaining experience so they can create a excellent game.
