InfraSuperman: I wasn't being serious. That was a reference to the regionlocking of those four games for Germans.

Navagon: Still? Fucking hell...

Because obviously anyone who plays a game about shooting nazis will become one themselves.
That's bullshit.

SIEG HEIL!

I mean seriously, where to you get SIEG HEIL this crap from?
Here is an amazing idea. One that works very well even!

Are you ready?

Wait for a sale if you don't like the price.
You mean like now? Yeah price is still too high.

Yep. I doubt there will be any change soon, either.
It's all about the swastikas. BloodRayne doesn't have them, so they happily to sell it to Germans.
But Wolfenstein? Nah, we can't have that.

Why in the world they locked Q2 and Q3 is beyond me. I suppose their rationale is that they're still on the "index" in Germany, but so is a whole bunch of other games on here that are still available to us.

Then suck it up and play something else?
avatar
Tranquil.Suit: (1992) Wolfenstein - $10
(1994) Doom - $6
(1995) Doom 2 - $10
(1997) Quake - $10
(1998) Quake 2 - $10
(2001) Quake 3 - $20
(2002) Return Wolfenstein - $10

GOG, have you gone bonkers? These games are (on average) more than 15 years old.

Not to mention, there exist free open-source and, dare I say, superior alternatives. Like say Xonotic.

I can't imagine paying these prices out of pure nostalgia.

Ganni1987: Bethesda makes those prices not GOG, in the case of Quake 1 and 2 you should feel lucky, if you buy them with their expansions they'd cost you double on Steam.

I think the situation is this, Bethesda knows these are still highly sought after games and so profits from the situation, It's kinda ironic since Skyrim has definitely cost much more to produce yet the base game sells for 15e.
Fair enough, if Bethesda is holding these classics financially hostage, I guess GOG can't do a whole about it.

Still, on the consumer end, it's rather flabbergasting.

What's with the hostility? Not too long ago, before digital game shops, these game were practically abandonware. Now this sudden price skyrocket. That doesn't raise an eyebrow?

What does "practically abandonware" mean?

Heck, even when I first discovered abandonware back in like 2000 the ID games used to disappear from most such websites due to legal threats. The distribution of ID's games never stopped, you could always order them from their website and their earlier stuff from 3D Realms. So no, out of all old game series ID's shooters are the ones that never became abandoned.

ZFR: What does "practically abandonware" mean?
1) So hard to find in retail that the far more practical option is piracy.
2) If found, the retail price is under $5. Basically, shop is getting rid of remaining stock.

1. These games were always sold some way some how, id Software's store has sold them long before GOG or even Steam. As a matter a fact id sold them for TWICE as much as GOG or Steam.

2. Abandonware isn't legal, and unless the rights are completely screwed is the only time it's "justified".

3. Complaining about these prices in particular is odd considering this site sells similar games for the same price.

Plus they're on sale but that's still to much for you? Quake 1 and 2 are $5. Doom is $3. That's like, lunch or a coffee. Give me a break. Not to mention GOG's Quake packages come with the music, and extras no other store is offering.

What do you want them to be?
Don't buy it.
Problem solved.
There are much better games out there to be bought.

edit: a year ago or so i saw Q3 Arena in collector's tin box on amazon for 18 bucks, brand new.
This price cannot be justified, i absolutely agree with you.

Yeah, I couldn't believe the new prices for these games. Quake 3 was released in 1999 and yet the base price is $20 today. And that's for a game that's pretty much multiplayer only.
Publishers decide about the prices not GOG. If you see a game is on sale or its price decreased, it's another decision by publisher. A contract between publisher and distribution service. So don't expect miracle. Just don't miss your favorite games when they are on big sales.

What do you want them to be?
1. Twice as much? Yaiks. That's not a viable option.

2. You have your boundaries, I have mine.

3. Examples?

4. Ignoring your implicit insult of me being a cheapskate... Yes, I still think it's too much. How much is reasonable?

Well let's see, take the Prince of Persia bundle. The graphics aren't lowrez, the gameplay hasn't been surpassed. In other words, these (mostly) great games STILL hold up. I bought the bundle at $10. That's $2.5 per game.

Compare to the Id Bundle. Except for Return Wolfenstein, the gameplay/gfx have been surpassed... by freeware. It would buy this only out of nostalgia. It would have to be for less than PoP.
Modern Prices = Space Bucks
