Hi everyone,

I have a small YouTube channel dedicated to retrogaming and this week I decided to take a look at Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. I played the PS1 and Dreamcast versions back-to-back and even compared the two.

I hope you'll enjoy it

Very nice job and quite in-depth. Only thing I would suggest is a followup to compare the PC version.... which is available right here on GOG.com so head over to your cart and add *Gets knocked out by anti-spam bot*.

Haha! The only reason I didn't do the PC version comparison as well was because I don't own a physical edition. Hopefully one day.
Good review. A lot of YouTube reviews can be a chore to watch, but yours was pretty entertaining. It would have been pretty informative too, had I not played the game so many times. I did though, so I know all the things already. I do have one beef with the review though. You say the block puzzles are universally disliked. I know for a fact that at least one person liked the block puzzles for some reason.

I know the music is different. The Playstation version has some sort of dynamic music system, but the PC version is just set tracks. Not sure why.

Funny thing, the script originally said "almost universally hated" but while reading the line I skipped over the "almost" part without realizing it.
No dude, it was a pretty safe bet that nobody likes the block puzzles. There is probably just something wrong with me.

Maybe you're just really into Budokan :P
That whole series could be the poster boy for rushed projects, so much cut content and half baked mechanics. Needless to say, I have lots of good memores from playing it back in the day.

It's one of the few series I wish was made in today's market. There was more than enough half finished material left on the cutting room floor for several dlc releases... Just not quite enough to be considered an expansion at the time it was realeased.

For those who are interested in exactly what got cut, the folks at The Lost Worlds put it together for you:

Edit: Actually, I was another one who enjoyed the block puzzles too. It was the combat/impaling mechanics I couldn't stand.

Yeah, I briefly touched on the cut content, honestly, I could do a whole video on cut content for these games and it still wouldn't be enough.

I feel the LOK games could have been amazing but were sorely mismanaged by Eidos.

Surprised at how much support the block puzzles are getting though :P
Hmmm... i remember trying the PS1 version, but after having long since beat the PC version, the framerate got to me bad.

That and playing on the max resolution i could (either 800x600 or 1024x768 at the time) downgrading left me feeling iffy...

Really? The frame rate was pretty solid for that game. Could be a bit of snobbery, don't worry. it happens to to us all :P
Gameplay is just MEH. Never cared much for it. It was the voice acting and story that carried this series and kept me coming back.

I don't mind the block puzzles. What I mind is the ever respawning enemies, which I just eventually started sikpping.

I'm going on memory. But 24fps vs 30+fps...

At least that's the impression i remember...

The block puzzles were so slow as i remember... not hard, just took work.

I remember gameplay being okay, but you're right, the voice acting & story really held the game together.

It still wasn't all that bad. It's pretty good for a PS1 game. Definitely recommend the Dreamcast version over it in terms of performance, though I prefer the murky look the PS1 version has.

BTW OP that video was very good

Yeah, after a while I just started running around enemies and avoiding them.

I really love the gameplay though, I loved exploring this post-apocalyptic world
