kai2: Why Bethesda would be a loser?
avatar
StingingVelvet: The reason is right there in my post.
I think you might be misunderstanding the situation.

In order to get a bit of perspective on this situation...

Bethesda tried to buy Human Head years and years back (2010 - 2012).

Rhinehart (head of Human Head Studios) refused.

Bethesda tried to pressure him to sell. They tried to claw back Prey 2 development money from HHS (and even refused to pay them promised monies) -- all to force a sale to Bethesda.

Again Rhinehart refused.

Having lost, Bethesda got vindictive and outright cancelled an almost ready-to-ship Prey 2 (still not paying much of what they owed HHS).

So, this time they waited for HHS to bleed out and then poached the talent without buying the company. Bethesda got everything they wanted

If you want some corroboration on the Prey 2 scenario, there's plenty online. Here's on article on it:

I'm saying they're the losers because Human Head make shitty games. It has nothing to do with anything you just ranted about. It's right there, in a simple sentence, in my original post. I'm baffled I have to write it again.

idbeholdME: And yeah, being an EGS exclusive, the soonest they can release the game on other platforms is 1 year from the release on EGS.
That's not necessarily accurate. Sometimes EGS has a 1 year exclusivity deal, but other times, they have exclusivity deals that are less than 1 year.

Ok, you feel Bethesda might make shitty games since they've picked up shitty devs. Check.

And my point was simply Bethesda saw enough promise in Prey 2 that they actively tried to force the studio into a sale.

But maybe we'll get Fallout 88 Revenge of the Quiet Man.

Thanks for your clarification and not being a complete d@#k about it. ;)

A few people have put together all the cancelled Prey 2 publicity and there is video with gameplay.

Didn't know that. Thought it was always a year.

It was literally just the first one I clicked. I don't regularly check any internet news about gaming and have no idea what they are or aren't. I'm not gonna link multiple of them and you can just search for the news on any outlet you desire.

fronzelneekburm: If that's the case, I can only shake my head in disbelief. It certainly wouldn't be the first time Bethesda pulled this little number. When will studios learn?
Sadly they have learned....learned how to be sneaky and underhanded, that is.

Fonzer: I just played it not long ago, more the rune gold version and it's a very good game that i enjoyed very much.
Great game but decapitating them undead in hel is a real pain.

For what it's worth, Prey 2 would have been absolutely amazing. I'm still saddened and feel the world is a much bleaker place without that game existing.

After the kick ass outro to Prey(2006) and that killer soundtrack/cutscene I wanted more....too bad we never got it.
Eurogamer is trash, but it seems that you are, too. o.O

idbeholdME: Link to one of the many news outlets that show up on the internet.

It happened a day after Rune 2 released on EGS. I only hope that the original Rune is not in danger of being removed from GOG because of that.
They probably are going to fill the new Rune game with Games as Services, selling "sweet digital goodies" as we see in Fallout 76, Blades, etc. Zenimax and Bethesda are milking machines, the level of lies that Todd Howard promoted at E3 with 76, not to mention his career as a whole, it is mind-blowing how the fanboys still supporting these people.

Maybe, maybe not. The point is I don't think it's a studio anyone should try acquiring. They haven't made a good game since 2006, and their last few games have been especially bad. That doesn't mean it's impossible Bethesda can get a good game out of them, but it sounds like it was a spur of the moment acquisition that might bite them in the ass.
I don't understand the relationship between Human Head & Ragnorok, who helped finance Rune II; Ragnorok replied that they were caught completely off-guard by the studio closure. But, it seems one of the studio-staff stated that it was a financial entity set up by Human Head itself to broker financing with a company called ESDF, which is a financier of PC titles. But, if you go to ESDF's website, it kind of looks. . . barren; I mean, there's enough there to imply a company presence, but little else. All the posted news and links on that site don't go past 2017. Unless I'm not connecting the dots, something feels off here.

Money laundering maybe?

Well, to me, it just looks odd. I mean, how could Ragnorok be surprised: "This is shocking news to us." Wouldn't that be like CDProjekt Red was "shocked" to find out, the same time as the general public, that GOG.com was closed, and its employees hired by Valve Inc. . . as though these two tax-entities (CDProjekt Red & GOG.com) were worlds apart?

And there's scarcely mention of ESDF's presence anywhere.
