I'm leaving VR!

At least for a while. See, I'm having my laser operation in a few days, so I have to avoid using contact lenses prior to that. I could use VR while wearing glasses, but I'm afraid this might scratch the HMD lenses. After the operation there will be a week or so where my eyes has to heal. Hopefully, my upgraded eyes will work well in VR. And in real life too, of course.

In the meantime, I'll give life without VR a try. Totally retro, this.

I have tried researched early VR attempts. The first time a HMD was patented was in 1945. That's pretty early.

The most solid article I came by was this one:
HMD History and Objectives of Inventions

This article has better pics, though.

Yet another article begins with this sentence:
Virtual reality, it may seem unrealistic and what first comes to mind is that this type of technology is only used on futuristic sci-fi films like Star Trek and Star Wars. To ordinary people, it is bizarre.
That article was from 2013. What was bizarre a few years ago is now a mainstream product.

This one gives a fair warning of things to come, endning with one real solid quote.

So anyway, I have one laser eye operation coming up today. Gonna be fun, I think. At least, its something new.

Mostly because everyone involved in the experiment is dead.

I paid good money for that laser eye operation, but it turned out to be a real disappointment. It WON'T LET YOU SHOOT LASER BEAMS OUT YOUR EYES AT ALL!

What happened. I mean, you know ... if you don't minding talking about it?

Nothing happened. :P I made a stupid post.
VR? In reality I can do things. In this VR-Demos (they are not games) I can only do what the progam allows me to do.
And I must wear those ugly goggles.
For me VR is a hype and the more interesting thing for the future is AR.
Most of the VR titles I've seen demos of or see offered on Steam at the moment are either glorified tech demos, simplistic experimental games and similar. For actual games that I consider real games, very few support VR and those that do it seems very few support it full blown. I haven't seen any advertise VR that made me excited or want to turn my head for the most part. To date the only titles that come to mind that I've heard the developers state the game supports or will support meaningful VR which appeal to me in any way are:

- Star Citizen
- Fallout 4
- DOOM

Admittedly I have not done any major research on what games plan to fully support VR meaningfully which aren't just a gimmick or tech demo or parlour trick. If anyone knows of any significant titles I may have overlooked please mention them though so I can have a look and potentially bookmark for the future. My ultimate VR game experience would be something like The Elder Scrolls VI: Valenwood, or The Witcher 4 personally, however there are a lot of other games that would fit into VR nicely in theory also.

KasperHviid: The US military designed the internet to have a data network which could withstand a nuclear attack. Today, the internet influences every aspect of our life, and has altered the way our mind work. (source: 'The Shallows' by Nicholas G. Carr) Also, the net has been use to expose the militarys own crimes against humanity. Not at all what they had in mind when they designed it.

It is the same with VR. We have the technology, and there is a market, so of course it get produced. But we have no idea where it will take us.

Back in the days of the television, some guy suggested that the television media itself had its own message, which would take precendence despite the messengers intentions: "The media is the message". Likewise, Twitter and Youtube comments have a different message than a book or a painting. You may try to say something deep and profound on Twitter, but the medias inherient message will always dominate. Likewise, it is hard to be streetwise and tough in a haiku poem.

Virtual Reality is a new media. More than that, it is a new reality. A virtual one, but a reality nonetheless. We don't know what its message is. But I feel VR might bring about some deeper, more empathic digital experiences. (And end the world, of course.)

Which is why I created this slideshow of vintage 3D erotica for the Rift:

There was a crazy old movie I saw once with Mr T in it and VR was how the antichrist took over the world. Or something like it.

Edit: It must have been this one: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0257408/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_13

I would like to try VR because it's looks cool, but tbh lots of VR games look very crappy....
Looks like they grab a mobile game or a very bad pc game they add VR option and everybody likes it because it's VR, because of the hype.

But there are some really interesting games next to these, and I would like to try those definitely.

C'mon, don't tell us that you aren't excited to stand on one heel and spin in a circle shooting ever encroaching zombies until you knock pictures off the wall in the room your standing in and accidentally choke yourself on the 10 pound cord dangling from your forehead... ;oP
